My Macbook Pro is also not going to sleep, It sleeps when i click sleep in the apple menu, but does not go to sleep on its own after the set time in preferences and it does not sleep when i close the laptop like it used to before lion. I have no extra programs on my mac, its pretty much stock how it came out of the box other than lion. I use itunes, mail, and safari and i always leave those open but that is it, nothing new to this computer except lion. Any help? Thanks.

Since installing Lion 10.7, my MacBook Pro also will not go to sleeo, The display goes black, but the hard drive keeps spinning. This happens both when I close the lid and when I pull down Sleep from the apple menu. I am not using an external display. Just my solo MBP with all applications closed.

KEY NOTE: This only happens when power is connected. If I detach my power cable, my MBP enters sleep mode normally.

Taking advice of this and other threads, I have:

:: reset my SMC

:: reset my PRAM

:: internet sharing, file sharing etc. is off

:: I unchecked "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" (however, when I shut down or restart, my apps and windows reopen from last session; I can't defeat this).

After all this, when my MBP is plugged in, sleep mode still ain't happenin'. Sleep worked fine in Snow Leapard, etc.

Look at your settings in System Preferences… -> Energy Saver in the "Power" tab and make sure "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" is checked.

If you turn off internet sharing it will sleep. Without this only the display sleeps. However Snow Leopard would sleep fully with internet sharing on from the menu bar, but not after the time delay. I think this was the right mix.

I have tried this and it worked fine, My MBP wont go to sleep if the mag safe is plugged in, it turns off only the TFT when plugged, i have disabled all the sharing settings (files, internet, bluetooth)

No Internet Sharing here.

MB only sleeps when power is disconnected. With power connected and lid closed, it doesn't sleep. Only event from the console after lid close is:

7/28/11 4:55:21.496 PM [0x0-0xab0ab].backupd-helper: Not starting Time Machine backup after wake - less than 60 minutes since last backup completed.

I suspect this has nothing to do with the problem. But, I am noticing that when the power is disconnected the console logs that closed lid is detected. Not so with the power connected...

Turning off Internet Sharing worked for me.

Background: I upgraded to Lion when it came out. I usually sleep my iMac each night, which worked just fine for several years with Snow Leopard. After the upgrade to Lion, I noticed that the iMac woke up very quickly in the morning - a quick check revealed that it was never going to sleep.

I had internet sharing (system preferences, sharing) turned on as several years ago I did not have an external wi-fi - I ran the internet cable into my iMac, then broadcast via the iMac's wi-fi. A few years ago we switched routers and the new one had a built in wi-fi. I had left the iMac wi-fi broadcast on apparently.

I turned internet sharing off, selected Sleep, then my iMac went to sleep for the first time in a week.

I know did again a clean installed of Lion without installing the Lion Server.

Now the sleep mode works again.... So it seems, that installing Lion Server is responsible for the iMac not going to sleep.

I installed Lion server because of the VPN functionality. I got this working without Lion Server by using a smart tool EasyVPN, which allowed me to setup OS X Lion as VPN server (PPTP and L2TP) without having Lion Server installed. you can get this tool at: http://www.squashedsoftware.com/products-easyvpn.php

Perhaps this is useful for somebody...

I have a similar problem since updating to Lion:

internet sharing is off, so is wake on lan and sleep mode for HDD is on.

every time I put my mac pro to sleep it will do so for the first time. but when waking it up and then later on putting it back to sleep mode it will power down and then immediately start again.

I have closed all programs and still it will do so.

after having had a look into console it says there:

02.08.11 08:24:58,000 kernel: hibernate_write_image done(e00002eb)

so my first guess was I touched the keyboard or something but I definately did not. same with the mouse.

does anyone have an idea?
