Connection problems to dLink DSL-504G (apple-apple)

Hi guys,

sounds like an easy one but the other apple, the one with the DSL-504G, is in New Zealand and the owners (family) are having some difficulty setting it up. They have opened the correct ports in their PBook firewall but opening the correct ports on the DSL is harder. DSL (modem and router in one) doesn't appear to have a UPnP option (I've downloaded the manual and can't find any mention)

I'm able to connect my iBook to other macs and PC via iChat and AIM (lots of help from and thanks to Ralph!)

So does anyone in the wonderful mac community have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any responses - do ask for more info as I've probably missed out some crucial stuff, i'll ask family in NZ to join the thread too.

Regards, Ben.

NZ has now worked out how to join the discussion! Sorry for the delay - not helped by the time difference and 8 week old son!

Thanks for looking into this guys. For some reason the links that you sent me by email didn't work Ben, but I managed to find my way to the forum. I'll follow Ralph's link from here and see how we go.

Cheers

Thanks for your help. Our ISP assigns a dynamic IP address to our computer. We tried to set up a static IP address for port forwarding. This required us to find out the IP addresses of the DNS servers to use from our ISP. They could not/did not give us the information and seemed a bit confused by the request. They suggested that we need to tell the person we want to chat to our IP address each time we connect. That seems a bit of a hassle, and it's not clear how it would work in practice anyway.

Do we need to demand the information from our ISP again, or is there another way to set up a static IP address?

Hi Will,

THis is not about how the IP is given to your home as it were.

It is about how the modem gives out IPs on your Local (home) net.

You do not need toknow the IP Public or otherwise of the peron at the other end of the chat.

This is an example of a Linksys device's front page where all these things are together. In this case it is a router and not a modem.

The top setting are where it asks for a Static IP from the previous device. Lower down is where it has DHCP to the local net turned off (making the whole net it controls Static). It is the comuters that then tell the modem what IP's they are going to use. ANd that is the bit on your computer that you are going to have to change

I'm having the same issue with that modem in NZ, the DSL-504G ... however I have assigned myself a static ip from the modem of 10.1.1.4.

It still doesn't appear to be working, I was testing with Defcom1 and it appears all my other settings are correct.

I am running 10.4.6, on a powerbook G4 ... all latest updates. Mac firewall is off, I made sure the quicktime streaming is correct ... the only other issue I thought it might be is ... I set the quicktime speed to 112 kps, I have a fast DSL connection here at home. Ichat I have the bandwidth limit set to None.

This is the modem config page is anyone can notice any mistakes ....

I noticed on the portforwarding website that it says to leave the private ip to 0 ... but on the dlink website with the 504g it says to make that the port I am opening, will try that and see if it makes a difference.

This is the support page for my modem, is had a PDF document a few links down which has options for filtering ... is this neccesary?? I might have a tinker with that and see, as i seem to have exausted every avenue ....

Ralph, Defcom1 any ideas?? or anyone else for that matter! 😀 Help! 😀

Hi Defcom and Paul,

If there is an Airport in the loop that will need Distributing Addresses turned off.

Then the computer can get an IP from the modem.
If the modem has DHCP turned off that will need to be Static (Manually on the Mac) to one in the range of the D-Link.

Turnig off Distributing Addresses on the Airprot makes it a wireless access point and it does not route. Therefore default addressing from the modem can be seen and used.

Well the modem ip is 10.1.1.1 ... so my assigned ip of 10.1.1.4 from the DSL504g is well within the range, and I am not using the airport while I am testing. Im getting the ip direct from the modem.

Any ideas??? I've pretty much done everything you guys have suggested in your replies to others, what did you think about the filtering, did you get a chance to look at the modem support site.

Its lucky i'm pretty computer literate, not sure how normal computer users would be able to fix this ... ... suppose most people will just wait for Skype Video for MAC 😀

any ideas ??

Hi Paul,

That does seem a bit odd that it does not work.

I take it the MAc is set to Mannually get an IP address and 10.1.1.4 is a specific thing you typed in on the MAc Netowrk settings ?

IS the subnet the same on both devices ?

Can you reach any of the test accounts or real people ?

Hi Ralph and Defcom1! .... well I think Ive reached a bit of a stalemate, once again tho I have to thank Defcom1 for being so helpful and generous with his time! ...
I think there lies a problem with my modem and my brothers modem in England (a notorious BT one I believe) ... strange because I, and my brother in England can ichat fine with Defcom1 ... but my brother and myself cannot, frustrating! ... also I found out my upload speed is around 260kbps, which doesnt help the matter.
Anyway I guess theres no solution here, will wait for Skype Video on Mac and hopefully that works! woohoo!
