On Leopard I could simply put down the volume before a shut down, and I had no anoying start up sound.However this seems not to work anymore on Lion.Which possibilities do I have to start my system without the roaring bong?

It's no use appealing to "Apple people". Apple do not contribute to these forums.
I am amazed that all this angst is poured into the question of the startup sound. My Mac starts up with no sound at all that i am aware of. It is set to fire up 15 minutes before I expect to be sitting in the same room in front of it. Standard available feature. It also gives me, as far as I am aware, instant startup. Walk into the room, tap the space bar to wake up the screens and start doing whatever I want to do.
"sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%80" is the only method I could get to work to stop the startup sound on my MacBookPro 10,1 running OS X 10.9.1.
And it's not a typo - %80 (eighty) makes it completely silent for me. I don't think you can use another value... (but haven't tested)
Try this:-
Go to MacUpdate.com, and look for StartNinja.app, install it.
It works just fine on my Mac with Maverick.
You first have to allow the "from Anywhere" download option in System Prefs>Security>General>Apps downloaded from..... Don't forget to cancel that permission when finished.

Doesn't work on iMacs 😟 (I beleive you have a macbook).
No, my Mac is an iMac, 21", Model 12,1. date mid-2011.
I used the Start Ninja on it when I ran Mountain Lion, then upgraded to Maverick and it continued to work fine.
Last week I accidentally trashed the app during a clean-up, so downloaded from the quoted website and installed it again and it is working just as before.
I'm not an expert so can't offer any ideas!

Macbook mid 2010. Mavericks. Onyx works fine for shutting off the sound.
I found another solution.
I came to the Mac world years ago, tired of the Windows world.
At the beginning I was very satisfied of the change.
But the time proved me that these guys were downgrading their OS for I-don't-know-why the reasons.
Fed up of seeing how nice features / utilities were being lost after upgrades (local web server, cover flow, compilers, etc), having to install more than 5GB XCode and other huge stuff, I am moving again to a different world.
Since a couple of years I am using Ubuntu at the same time and I will never again buy any other Mac for me.
No problems with the startup sound, compilers etc.
The whole Ubuntu takes less than 1GB. Compare it with ONLY XCode!!!
And my first irritating issue with the Apple sectary way of life was this startup sound...

but unfortunately, the chime returns back after a few days.
