disable start up sound

On Leopard I could simply put down the volume before a shut down, and I had no anoying start up sound. However this seems not to work anymore on Lion.Which possibilities do I have to start my system without the roaring bong?

If you have headphones connected to your Imac but still hearing annoying startup sound, try following steps:

1. open "System preferences", Sound and "Output" tab

2. Unplug your headphones and watch "select a device for output" list

3. After a while there should be appearing "Internal Speakers"

4. Check "mute" checkbox from bottom

5. Plug your headphones back, mute checkbox shold change back to unchecked

now startup sound should be muted 🙂

I figured out what might be wrong for a lot of you after some testing. StartupSound.prefPane does work you just have to set it up correctly. Here is what I did:

1. Enable the root user. Use the following instructions and when you do use the Directory Utility...it's easier.

http://www.macosliontips.com/tips/enable-root-account-in-mac-os-x-lion.html

2. Once you have the root user enabled. Go to System Preferences> Other> Startup Sound while still logged in as the root user.

3. Check the "Turn onstartup volumecontrol" box.

4. Turn the "Startup volume" all the way down.

5. Check the "Mute" box.

6. Shutdown (don't restart) your mac and from now on the startup sound should be muted regardless of whether you shutdown or restart.

7. Make sure to keep your root user enabled. Disabling it disables StartupSound.prefPane.

The few problems I was having was that I was just restarting and I had the mute box checked but didn't have the volume turned all the way down. It seems dependent on the volume being turned all the way down and making sure you shutdown once.

Hope this helps some people.

What's wrong in my iMac?

Since the third boot I can't mute anymore startup sound.

I repaired permissions and resetted PRAM.

I tried to follow the Andressade's Instructions and...... the boring sound comes out the internal speakers each time I reboot!!!

Andressade's instructions worked only three times for me.

This AppleScript mutes the internal speakers (startup sound volume). Substitute your password.

do shell script "osascript -e 'set volume with output muted'" password "yourPassword" with administrator privileges

This sets the internal speakers volume to 50%, which is what I use.

do shell script "osascript -e 'set volume output volume 50'" password "yourPassword" with administrator privileges

This is a very strange behaviour in my mac.

System Preferences->Sound->Output-Internal Speakers->Muted and no external speakers plugged in.

Restarted mac and no sound.

Restarted again and sound is back again.

System Preferences->Sound->Output-Internal Speakers->and Mute checkbox is checked!!!!

in terminal I did a sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook and here is the followind answer:

The domain/default pair of (com.apple.loginwindow, LoginHook) does not exist

System Preferences->Users and Group->Login Items here is what I can see:

iTunesHelper (hidden)

Hyperdock Helper

Vmare Fusion Helper

Shades

MagicPrefs

I don't know what's wrong.

I'm trying to read logs to figure out a kext / script which try to set on the volume and back muted when lion is completed started.

I' don't know what else I can do to solve my problem.

(all permissions are repaired with disk utility and no file corruption in my volume).

Thanks in advance for any kind of support.
