How can I prevent mail attachments embedding when sending mail

In Lion when I send out an image - the recipients are receiving them as embedded images instead of simple attachments. I know in previous version of mail, having windows friendly attachments enabled solved this, but it doesnt seem to be helping in Lion mail.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

It's not up to apple to find workarounds for bugs in Microsoft software, which this is.

Just Zip your jpgs and the problem goes away

I don't think it is MS software. I use web-based Gmail to receive email from iPhone users, and their photos are rendered in full size in the body of the email.

And does Gmail cause you any problem getting the attachment out of the email message? That is the bug with Outlook.

Guess the only thing we CAN be sure of, is after years of complaints and ignoring the problem, Apple have no intention of NOT embedding attachments.

It's my guess Apple aren't bothered if you don't use their mail, and are quite happy for mac users to migrate to mail program that can attach documents - that the rest of the world can use.

If it's Windows' fault, then the "Send Windows Friendly Attachments" should work. And to be hones, it should be the default.

That was Apple's one attempt to workaround the first bugs in Outlook. Every subsequent version of Outlook has some other bug that must be dealt with differently. There is no way for Apple to chase down all of Microsoft's poor coding. Microsoft needs to make an email client that supports the email standards.

Gmail DOES cause me problems getting the attachment out of the email message.

The collage below shows all pertinent information when sending image attachments (one jpg, one png) from Mac Mail, and receiving in Web Gmail.

Note the top-right corner (red ellipse). In the Gmail Inbox view, that's where one would see a paperclip icon indicating an attachment. It's missing.

Note in the Gmail message view: the images are inline, distorted from their original dimensions, and not downloadable as attachments. (Original images are shown at bottom.)

Info: Mac OS X El Capitan (10.11.1), Mail Version 9.1, Google Chrome Version 48.0.2564.82 (64-bit).
