OS X Lion freezes at login screen + App Store is slow

I installed OS X Lion in my Mac Book Pro (Mid 2010) and have two issues:

- Login screen freezes sometimes. "Colored rotating disc" appears, text cursor stops blinking and I can not do anything; I can not click anywere, I can not enter my user name/password... Only option is to hard-reboot the computer, which is not a pleasant thing to do.

- App Store is very slow. It takes about 30 seconds of "rotating colored disc thinking" every time a page has to be loaded!

I first installed OS X Lion via Mac App Store and login screen freezes happened about 50% or more of the times I turned on the computer! Also random freezes happened during computer work. Computer was almost unusable under these circumstances, so I reinstalled OS X Lion by doing a clean install (from DVD). After this clean install everithing seemed to run smoothly at first, but now login screen freezes happen again and Mac App Store is very slow as I explained.

I did not have any of these problems with Snow Leopard. I have checked permissions, and I have not installed too many apps yet.

Anybody with these same issues? Any idea of a solution? Somebody at Apple working to solve these problems?

Thanks!

gliderJoe: Topher Kessler's cnet.com review is excellent advice (Re. getting ready to install 10.8 - expected sooner rather than later). But I'm still disappointed to think that Apple is not going to offer a Software Update "patch" (10.7.4)? for Lion before asking us to fork over more $$$, on faith, for 10.8.

Personally I have lost faith - after having been an Apple fanatic since 1984. I am planning to ditch my iPhone4 for a Blackberry Bold (9900-9930). However, I will still eventually get an iPad. Even after a year, I still don't like my iPhone's virtual keypad much. (but I have friends who do - so "different strokes for different folks").

Nadeem,

Are you experiencing freezes at the log in screen with the latest build of OS X 10.7.4?

This situation is just ridiculous now. I mean anyone that has a MBP from mid-2010 cannot run the latest version of OS X properly because of the problems that Lion has with the nvidia 330m GPU. I won't even consider Mountain Lionnin light of this if Apple has not been able to figure out what's wrong with Lion it means that they will not fix the issue and hope that users will buy another computer.

I'm still experiencing the freeze on my 6,2 MBP after an upgrade to 10.7.4. It happens everytime I start the computer while not connected to an external display. Very frustrating. Not ranting, not threatening, just stating what's happening.

@Metalizer - I just did a fresh install of 10.7.3 on an SSD this weekend with no software installed. No one should have to use some third party tool to clear "system caches" to get their OS to boot properly.

I'll do some experimentation tomorrow by installing OSX Lion via the full 10.7.4 installer from the app store and see if the issue is replicable. If it is present in a clean install it means that Apple has no clue of what's happening. I've personally had sent 12 reports already about this same issue via Apple Bug Reporter and every time I as for an update I get te standard "there's no any new information about this issue".

I can certainly confirm that I've been running my computer manually on the Intel Integrated Card on a MBP 6,2 since the latest developer seed of 10.7.4 and last night's official 10.7.4 build and failed to reproduce the problem.

The problem first occured ONLY when running on the Intel card. (the freezing, not black screens, which are related to the faulty logic boards for Nvidia).

Users who can easily reproduce the problem should head to Apple Stores and show the problem to one of the geniuses and ask for an immediate solution.

In my case, the updated drivers and power management Kexts in 10.7.4 fixed the problem, at least for now. If I manage to face any freezes, I will surely let you guys know in this thread.

One thing that should be noted, users should not mix between the black screen issue related to Nvidia GPUs and the issue mentioned in this thread. Users with blackscreens are eligible for full logicboard replacement even if out of warranty.

Best of luck for all of you guys!

My story:

macbook pro 15" november 2010 - snow leopard -> amazing, never had any issue or crash! NEVER!

august 2011 - Lion -> so many crash, expecially with login freeze (death wheel).

i went to genius bar at apple store in Milan, they told me these things:

- do a fresh install of Lion (i previously updated from snow leopard)

- dont use program like onyx to clear system, "your system dont need them" (quote)

- dont use program like gfxcardstatus to switch graphic card, "your system dont need it" 😀

well, i do a fresh Lion install previous week, i try the fix in this thread and i can say that problem IS NOT solved.

i have a better situation now, about 1 crash in 10 days of new Lion fresh install, anyway the problem is not gone away.

this night i will be updating to 10.7.4 and then after a week i will tell you if problem is still here or not.

good luck 🙂

@Nadeem,

I see what you mean... Now here is another round of technical questions:

1. Was your computer's logic board swapped due to he nvidia 330m problem?

2. What kind of mid 2010 MBP do you have? Is it the mid 2010 with the Core i5 (2.4 or 2.5) or the Core i7 processor?

3. Did the developer's build number changed compared to last night's 10.7.4 update?

4. When you updated to 10.7.4 dev build, did you used the combo update, delta, or full 10.7.4 installer?

Sorry for asking these many questions but I am trying to narrow this issue down.

May 10, 2012 5:26 AM in response to vea1083

1- Yes. After a long fight they acknowledged the problem, and they swapped me with a newer revision logicboard that had a fixed Nvidia chip. Since then, no blackscreens when switching between graphics/using the nvidia geforce card.

2- MBP 6,2 Core i7.

3- Both updates had identical Graphics Kexts, as far as I checked (including the power management ones).

4- Delta. But shouldn't matter what I used. 10.7.4 is 10.7.4, delta or combo.

At least the Mountain Lion thing is good news... but is it fair for users who are having this problem to wait for the next release of OS X? That question is up to debate.

I think it would be wise for all of us experiencing this issue to send our feedback in large numbers to the Mac OS X feedback page here:

Also it might be a good idea to email the guy who has an email address in the following page. (if I say who it is my post will be <Edited by Host> 😉

I am all in for making Apple aware of this issue and we must use all means neccesary to do so. I will test Mountain Lion tonight and report my findings by tomorrow evening.
