Internet really slow after upgrading to Lion from Leopard!

Yesterday I upgraded to Lion from Leopard on my 2007 iMac (2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo), and everything seems to be running very smooth, except the internet is painfully slow! I know it is not an ISP or network issue because the internet on my iPad is running fast as ever on the same network.

Anyone else have this problem and know how to fix it?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

I'm not sure that this will be helpful, but I thought I'd provide a quick update.

After making/applying a modest change to my Ethernet and Wi-Fi settings in Lion (dropped my manually-assigned IP addresses in favor of DHCP-assigned IP addresses) my setup has been working just fine (just as good, if not better than, when I was running Snow Leopard). That is over 24 hours of consistent/good performance at this point.

I can confirm that - at least for me - the problem was specific to Lion. It did not exist previously (under Snow Leopard), I didn't make any hardware changes at all - everything is just as it was before Lion, and I have my work PC (a Windows machine) on the same network and access from that machine has been consistent and typical.

The problem is (was for me) most certainly Lion.

I'm having a similar problem. The internet is unbearably slow, although sometimes I'll get nice performance for a few minuntes.

The problem:

 • Safari loads websites painfully slowly.
 • Youtube needs to buffer a LOT.
 • Streaming music pauses intermittently to buffer.

The internet is quite fast on my nearby PC.

My setup:

 • New MBP 13" with Lion pre-installed; received it yesterday.
 • I have no CPU drain, like Citrix or Spotlight indexing. CPU is 97% idle even when streaming online music through Safari WITH Flash on.
 • I have an Apple router.
 • I'm not using manual DHCP.
 • Sending periodic pings to my IP through Terminal does not resolve the problem.
 • Non-internet processes are very fast, and I don't notice any excessive fan noise.

Since the connection with the router was still extremely slow I decide to play again with some settings on the router (which is a Linksys E4200 btw). First change I did was changing the channels it used which were on Automatic for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. I changed them to channels 11 and 44 respectively and now all of a sudden I have my full speed back. Of course it has just been back an hour or so, so let me look at it a few days if it will still be working for me. I'll try to give an update then if it is still working. Fingers crossed ...

I had similar problems in the upgrade from 10.6.5 to 10.6.6 with web browsing being very erratic. Some pages would load instantly, others time out, but no problems on other machine. I have tried all of the usual fixes, such as manually configuring network settings, using Google public DNS, flushing the DNS cache, etc., with minimal improvement. There was a MacRumors and Apple Discussion threads where someone made an installer that replaced normally hidden DNS-related files with the last known working set from 10.6.5 - and was able to apply the patch all the way to 10.6.8 with great success. No more inexplicable delays.

After installing Lion, I had the exact same problem reappear and it did not respond to anything, as before. I finally decided to back up my system and try the patch - even though it was from 10.6.5, the files themselves are basic networking. As before, 100% success. No internet problem - and no side effect on my system. I about ready to go backj to Snow Leopard, but now I am able to use Lion without difficulty.

Good luck!! Worked fantastic for me.

Not really the same in my opinion. In that topic it's almost only about the wifi that drops, this topic is about the wifi and utp being extremely slow all the time (not just after sleep or that it drops after a while).

On topic again it seems that the changing of the channels of the router did solve my problems. No idea how come but it's be stable and fast for the last couple days. Hope it stays that way.

Add me to the list. I'm hesitant between a simple DNS problem and a dropped packet issue, as even these discussions are painfully slow at times.

I'm connecting over Ethernet to a last gen Time Capsule (router is in bridge mode), so at least for me that rules out Wi-Fi issues. And once it has a connection to a file it looks fine most of the times - getting 90 out of my line's 100 megs on speed tests, even when Time Machine is backing up ⚠... and then for some reason failing upload test on www.speedtest.net completely, 3 times in a row ! (Doesn't even go through the upload test).

Some requests expire, so on a 100-element web page, it's very likely the page is supposed to show up slow because one item is blocking the whole thing.

It's not just Safari for me, Chrome is just as slow - some networking stack issue I'd think...

Surely hoping for a fix, it's really annoying to be waiting 30+ seconds for a simple webpage load, possibly just because one of the ads or icons isn't loading right...

Hi all I am seeing these problems on a new mac mini server with Lion installed OOTB. I run the disks in a raid 1 mirror and have been able to test using the website http://speedtest.net/. From all other devices on the network the performance is upwards of 8Mbs download but on the mini nothing but 1Mbs download.

I would prefer to see this reolved by Apple rather than installing a patch from 10.6.5. Does Apple look at these forums?

I just ran some additional tests at my house and it seems my speed problem is specific to my Mac mini with Lion. I upgraded my iMac and MacBook Pro as well and they are still at full speed (18Mbps). But my mini is at 50% speed only after the upgrade. This is additionally frustrating at the mini serves as my media center and where I stream Netflix/etc for TV. I tried the memory reset but no change for me. The mini has a core 2 duo vs the i5 in the other machines...not sure if Lion is ill-suited for this platform. Any additional thoughts/tips would be very welcome.

@lunghurts: are you on wifi or LAN? I talked with apple care yesterday and they suggested to reinstall lion by turning off the mini then holding "command" & "R" when powering up. In doing so you need to be connected to the Internet and for me this required switching to a direct LAN connection to my modem. I did the install overnight and did a speedtest check this morning while still on the LAN and was getting full bw (25 on LAN, whereas I get 18 through wifi). But when I switched back to wifi I'm still at <50%.

I did not check my speed on the LAN before doing the reinstall, but my latest datapoint is that it's specific to my Mac mini and specific to wifi connectivity. It's not too convenient for me to go without wifi, so this isn't a solution for me, unfortunately.
