save as missing in lion

For those of us who make modifications to a document on a regular basis, but need to retain the previous versions, or who need to keep the same revised document in several places, the removal of "Save As" is a disaster. In order to save as, you must, apparently, first export the document as a WORD or PDF, then after doing that, close the pages document, (Then a save as comes up,) allowing one save as and automatically closing the document. I have a series of files that i must keep in several locations, and they all change weekly, but I must be able to reference past copies as well. It aqppears that the only way to do this is to buy WORD and forget about Pages. Surely this must be a mistake by a committee who does not do word processing, or am I alone in this type of use?

jstepy,

I guess I am a little confused at this point. I am using iWork 09 V9.0.3 and it is working fine with Lion. I thought you had said earlier that V9.0.3 also works with Mountain Lion. However, you are using V9.0.3 updated to V9.0.5 with Mountain Lion. Are you using V9.0.5 with Mountain Lion because V9.0.3 is not compatible with Mountain Lion or because it is the last version that works without the new document features? This is important to me because I don't want to update to Mountain Lion and find out V9.0.3 is not compatible when apparently the V9.0.5 update is no longer available.

Reg. Guy,

Honestly I never just tried V9.0.3 in Mountain Lion... I have always just grabbed the DMG file for 9.0.5 and immediately installed it after installing from the retail disk. I've pretty much upgraded to V9.0.5 each time because it was the last version to work the way I wanted in Lion and now Moutain Lion.

I find it very odd that 9.0.3 does not work because to the best of my knowledge the 9.0.5 was a pretty minor update that added the whole iwork sharing beta service thing which does not even exist anymore as everything has moved to iCloud. If you go up to "About Pages" I have version 4.0.5 (852) and if you go to "About Numbers" I have version 2.0.5 (368) which works perfectly fine in Moutain Lion.

The new "save as" work around is a great step towards getting things back to the way they should be but for my work flow having to remember to "save as" before doing any editing is crazy. There are multipe times where after editing I need to "save as" which under the new way of thinking by Apple automatcally saves the current document under versioning etc. It's just a headache. I just wish there was a simple choice in preferences to turn this all on or off.

My DMG file of 9.0.5 update is 70MB and I would be happy to share it with people but I am not exactly the proper way to go about that in these forums.

jstepy,

Thanks for your reply. I should have downloaded 9.0.5 .dmg as you did, but never gave it a thought after I realized 9.0.3 worked fine with Lion without the new document features. And for my purposes, 9.0.3 has been fine. And I tend to agree that 9.0.3, as is, will probably be compatible with Mountain Lion. At this point, I think I will just stay with Lion and iWork 9.0.3 as long as possible or until Apple fixes this mess.

now tell me how to make my life easy and stay with mt lion??????

Save as is available in Preview and other Apple apps, hold the option key when the file menu is open and 'Duplicate' changes to 'Save As'

Ask Adobe about their apps.

I am using Lion 10.7.5

My problem regarding the loss of "Save As..." is that it undermines the usefellness of "Stationery Pad".

I create a template of a document in "Get Info". Opening it in TextEdit produces a copy, but you still need to Duplicate it in order to edit then save document with a new name.

Or am I missing something.

TO APPLE: The whole point of "Save as". Save as creates a new version at any time you want. To do the same with the current apple workflow, you need to create a new version before you start modifying your document. But most of the time you start creating mods and decide if you want to save them within the same version or create a new one after you see how much you have changed. If you wanted to create a new one after mods, you have lost the original version. You need to duplicate, save as and then go back to the document you were working on, revert to previous version which is kind of obscure because the you don't know which version you will end up with. It is a mess! -- Please give us the option to turn off auto-save and re-enable "save as".

I heartily endorse what net!pro says. Come on Apple, admit it and give us back a workable 'Save as'. I am actively discouraging friends and clients from upgrading to Lion because of this ridiculous situation.

You should be discouraging your friends from upgrading to Apple's previous OS (known as Lion) you should be telling them to upgrade to the current OS, Mountain Lion, if only for the Save As command that it has restored.

As silly as this sounds, I have a workaround that seems to be working. Go to "Help" in the nav bar and type in "Save As" - it will highlight/point to the "Save As" in the drop down menu and you can "Save As" from there. It's annoying to do this everytime I want to save a document with the "Save As" feature - but in Pages, this seems to be the only solution.

Having no "Save As" is a major pain for all of us used to using it often when working with multiple documents we modify to become new documents and we want to keep the former file. Although "save as" doesn't show in the file menu, if you put "save as" in the help menu it makes it show up. REALLY annoying though. Apple needs to fix this for next OS release.
