iTunes Won't Open After Lion Install

After updating to Lion, iTunes will not open. I get this message:

The file “iTunes Library.itl” cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Would you like to download iTunes now?

When I try to download iTunes, it always says an error occured. Is there any word from Apple on this? How do i get iTunes back??

Yes, why the heck hasn't Apple fixed this problem after 8 months?

Probably because there only seems to be a handful of people with the issue that may well be due to people having third party installs, not installing properly or a hundred other reasons. There are millions and millions of Mac users in the world and I think Apple would be aware if there was a real problem here. But if you believe differently then let Apple know at

You are not talking to Apple here, just other users.

just because Apple hasn't fixed it doesn't mean it's not wide spread or user error. I think on this the explanation is iTunes is updated frequently but the Lion Installer is not updated for minor iTunes changes. That's legit. I hit Software Update just now and five updates are available including iTunes and Safari. I was up to date immediately before the upgrade.

iTunes is getting to be a pain because there is a bug that has been well noted on here about smart playlists not syncing correctly to ios devices. Apple has suggestions in help files that work for one sync. The problem for me extended beyond smart lists. Thankfully the last iTunes update seems to have fixed the problem which occured with the IOS 5 update.

Just wanted to point out that on my system, iTunes 10.3 was installed by Lion. Within iTunes I would get the message that an update was available (10.63), but when I clicked Update, Software Update would tell me that my system was up to date.

The only solution was to go to apple.com/itunes and manually download the latest version of iTunes. Installed it and Boom! Back in business. (pro tip: if it's finding the wrong library, hold down the Option key while starting iTunes and you can choose the correct library.)
