iTunes Won't Open After Lion Install

After updating to Lion, iTunes will not open. I get this message:

The file “iTunes Library.itl” cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Would you like to download iTunes now?

When I try to download iTunes, it always says an error occured. Is there any word from Apple on this? How do i get iTunes back??

I try do download the new version of itunes from software upgrade and directly from apple website without sucess. I call tech support. After many manouvers they created another user account in my laptop reload itune from it and then proceed to delete the new user account. Now itunes works. I am sure they are aware of this bug, hopefully one day we will have a fix

you can use your last backed up library to fix the problem. Click on Finder>>select home/your user name on the left then double click on Music>>Itunes folder

Rename the ituneslibrary.itl file to be ituneslibrary.itl.old

Then go into the Previous itunes library folder and copy your last itl file, paste that back into the itunes folder and rename it to be ituneslibrary.itl

thats it

Here is the problem and solution that worked for me:

PROBLEM

1) Upgraded to latest iTunes 10.5.2

2) Upgraded to Lion a few days later

3) iTunes has error message..."Library.itl cannot be read..."

SOLUTION

1) Rename ~USER/Music/iTunes/Library.itl -> OLD_Library.itl_OLD

2) Start iTunes - your library will not appear...a new Library.itl will be created

3) Do an iTunes menu "Check for Update" and then install the newer iTunes

4) Shut down iTunes

5) Delete ~USER/Music/iTunes/Library.itl

6) Rename OLD_Library.itl_OLD to Library.itl

Whala, all fixed and updated.

I can't believe this problem has been around for several months and Apple hasn't fixed it yet. Too busy trying to finesse another operating system update to make my computer more like an iPad, which seems really misdirected, since if I wanted an iPad, I would just buy one. On that note, I'd like a phone that I can actually use as a phone. Apple software development priorities are consistently developer focused, with little or no regard for the most basic needs of their customers.

Thanks to the community for help with this bug. No thanks to Apple!

Thanks for the rant. Now do you have a question on iTunes?

Yes, why the heck hasn't Apple fixed this problem after 8 months?

Probably because there only seems to be a handful of people with the issue that may well be due to people having third party installs, not installing properly or a hundred other reasons. There are millions and millions of Mac users in the world and I think Apple would be aware if there was a real problem here. But if you believe differently then let Apple know at

You are not talking to Apple here, just other users.

The problem as Jeremy suggested is that application updates are being released before they are integrated in the OS update, so the first thing you need to do after installing Lion is go to "Software Update" under the Apple icon at the top level menu. Shouldn't be necessary to rename your itl file or do anything else, but I guess it couldn't hurt to create a copy under a new name as a backup.

I'll use the feedback link to suggest to Apple that the OS installation routine check for updates and install them before calling it done. Seems obvious, but...?
