Old iPod Classic has a firewire cable. New MacBook Air has no firewire port. How can I connect these devices? Get a new USB cable? Any adaptor that might work? Or is the old iPod Classic simply not compatible with new MacBook Air?

You can sync your iPod with your MacBook Air via a USB iPod cable provided your older iPod has a dock connection. It may require the wall brick and FireWire cable for charging, depending on what generation your iPod is, but it should sync with a USB cable just fine. If your older iPod doesn't have a dock connector (the flat connector thing that is about an inch wide), you may be out of luck.
I have two 4th gen iPods, a red click wheel U2 and an iPod photo, that I have synced to my computer using my daughter's iPod touch USB cable. They don't charge with her USB cable, though. For charging, I need the FireWire cable and wall brick.
