Upgrading is so Degrading

I upgraded my iMac, MBP and Mac mini to Lion and the performance has degraded on all of them. So far, I have yet to find a single benefit in having done the upgrade. Here's what I have so far:

-Sluggish apps

-Degraded graphics performance

-Degraded network performance

-Degraded streaming

-Intermittent HDMI blackouts on the mini

-Random resizing of iTunes on the mini's desktop

-Disappearing scroll bars

-Too many Safari glitches

Someone please tell me, what works better in Lion than in Snow Leopard?

Capaho, you did say "upgrade" so it might be helpful to know how long you have had your Mac's and what the original OS was. You can only upgrade so much before the hardware isn't supported anymore, requires more memory, or just needs to be upgraded along with the OS.

Could you tell us how much memory you have installed and the processor speed? Sometimes if your hard drive is full or close to full the performance slows a bit, or it could just be windows. So I guess if you could tell us the hard drive capacity and how much is used, it might help get you closer to a solution.

Maybe you should reinstall or do some maintenance on your setup. i have no performance issues with 10.7 (Lion) on an older iMac. I do not use all of the features but have no performance issues. Everything I use works but it forced me to clean up my HD and ditch some old Power PC apps I never really use. Even the old applejack works.

Try the free OnyX and see it it perks up your setup.

You listed a lot of apps but didn't mention what is better about them in Lion.

What specically works better in Safari under Lion compared to Snow Leopard?

In my case, spell check highlighting has vanished, some cookies do not remain set site while traversing a web site that requires them (that never happened before) and there are page formatting problems with some web sites that didn't show up in the previous version of Safari and that don't show up in Firefox.

The iTunes window resizes itself at random on my Mac mini and no matter how many times I close the Now Playing window it's always back the next time I launch iTunes.

I've also noticed that the dock seems to hang for a second before an app launches. I didn't see that in SL.

As for wifi, I'm seeing an increase in dropped packets and buffering compared to SL. Perhaps my Time Capsule needs a firmware update to keep pace with Lion?

Some people keep saying that I'm not providing specific information, but no one can point to a specific example of something that works better in Lion than it did in Snow Leopard. The absence of a discernable problem is not the same thing as an improvement in performance.

At this point I have to say I don't see the point in upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion. I have more problems with my Macs than I did before with no noticeable improvements in performance.

I dont have to justify Lion to you or anyone, and I am not telling you to upgrade or stay on Lion. I don't sell apple products, I am just another user. I chose to upgrade my mac to the new current OS X. I have not done the macbookpro yet cause that would be just stupid to do both systems until I had Lion on the mac and had time to check it out.

What have I found

- I had one horrible performance problem with Mail and AddressBook that was caused by my previous testing of FaceTime bet on Snow Leopard. I fixed it and Lion roared.

- Lots of new features in lots of core apps and so far I like them.

- Some apps, to me, look the same, but they seem to run better and are more responsive.

- Mail, iCal and AddressBook are new and different and so far I like them.

- Especially Mails new display format.

- the gestures with my magic trackpad are fantastic. I worry about this on the older macbookpro

- I have no problems with my mac and Lion

- I have noticeable improvements in performance.

- Network performance seems better. Large downloads run at a higher rate, close to my internet bandwidth. This could be a coincidence, as its only been a week.

I will now proceed to install Lion on the macbook.

I am not seeing any of the problems you are, or I do not percieve them as problems. No issues with iTunes. No delays on the Dock.

Getting delays on the Dock, that to me would indicate a problem. If you have modified your Leopard or Snow Leopard systems in the past and before installing Lion, I would recommend a clean install of Lion. Since you have 3 systems all with problems, it would inicate to me you have done something to all three systems to cause your problems. Whay I would do is try a clean install on one and see if that works. Or you can wait for a future update to Lion that may have included fixes that fix your problems because it could be a Lion causing problems on all three systems.

I have not seen any network problems in my lan. My Airport Extreme router is at the current firmware and I always keep it at the current firmware. I never like to see network problems. How are the pings to www.apple.com? How is your internet speed test in Lion? I use www.speedtest.net and one thing I noticed between Snow Leopard and Lion. With Snow leopard my speed test was always good hitting the max of 14Mbps but during the test the speed would fluctuate. With Lion it is at 14Mbps during the whole test. Have you checked your Lion connections to you lan, network definitions, and router connection to the modem?

Have you check the console logs for errors or indications of performance problems?

I do agree with your last statement, you should stay with Snow Leopard.

Clearly you should have eschewed the upgrade, I trust it will be but the work of an instant to restore your backups and find nirvana again

That is extremely unlikely.

Thus far I have installed Lion on 9 machines (7 of which are detailed in my "Lion with a relaxed attitude" post. All work correctly, all run faster, use less HD space, have a smaller memory footprint and are more responsive than prior to the installation.

Lion for me ranks as a superior to it's predecessor in all respects (except price)
