Reducing size of pdf in OSX Lion

Ladies and Gents,

Can you please let me know how I can reduce the size of pdf docs in OSX Lion. I use to be able to save as pdf, open it again and then "save as" with reduce option. In lion it only shows "Save version" instead of "save as". Thanks in advance and regards, Theo.

I avoid using the internet step by using the screenshot tool on my mac.

I just converted a 5.1 MB pdf file to a 658 kb file with little-to no loss of quality!

Here's how:

1. Open the pdf and take a screen shot (command+shift+4) With the crosshairs, select the pdf image.

2. Open the screenshot image.

3. Dropdown File, select Export as PDF...

Voila!

(Please note: this method really only works for 1 page pdfs or follow these steps one page at a time. So not the best method for multiple pages)

I recommend a solution that I have just discovered.

Free tool for Mac OS - Combine PDF.

Generally it's designed for creating one PDF file from numerous files.

But... If You have one PDF, You also can open this file in Combine PDF, and then click "merge PDF". Now just show when You want to save it.

So, the effect is amazing. My PDF file was 8 MB, and now it weights only 1,3 MB!

The quality is absolutely perfect. Any changes in resolutions. I'm comparing old file and new file in Preview tool and I don't see any differents... And You have to know, I'm crazy about quality!

Worked perfectly for me. I needed to convert some Word documents to PDF format. When I did that they mushroomed in size from 3MB to 20MB!

I tried PDFPen Pro (because I don't have Acrobat), but I was left with areas of the document that had black squares instead of pictures.

Using IslandOwl's suggestion, I was able to reduce the PDF files from 20MB to around 800kb. I checked out the quality in Preview and found the quality to be acceptable for my purposes.

Thanks!

I tried downloading and installing the filters, and using preview and the quartz filter.

I've also tried everything possible within adobe, but the process kept freezing. I have spent 6 hours on this now, trying to reduce a pdf about 13 MB. It never gets down lower than 9.

Some people are reporting results that I just can't understand.

I've now tried smallpdf.com, and it got a 10.7 MB file down to 6.2 - but I need it below 5 MB.

I just tried again re-downloading filters and following instructions, and my document went from 10 MB to 10 MB. No change at all.

I tried both standard compression and the most drastic, low-quality compression - neither reduces the file size.

BTW I am just using instructions from this thread. The link to the blog posted by Cynthia Cheney does not link to any instructions, the blog is not searchable, and I can't find it scrolling through. So what instructions did you use?
