Same - do the people who get paid to impliment these new upgrades actually spend time in real world situations to find out whether or not they work and / or cause problems for the folks who have paid good money to invest in thsi technology?

I recall there being a raft of problems in the OS3 to OS4 transition!

Disappointed again

MIke,

I, too am using iToner and went to their website which shows that iToner 2 is not compatible with IOS5 and 10.5. I noticed that my iPhone still has the ring tones loaded and they work most of the time, however the phone has been all jacked up when trying to sync.

You mentioned that disabling iToner will solve the problem. I attempted to do this but was unable to figure out how. Will I need to remove the ring tones from the phone manually before I disable iToner? iToner did say they are working on a new version so they will not issue any updates.

Thanks for your help!

Hello James,

Sorry I didn't see your posts earlier, but I'm glad you figured it out. It's the same thing that I had to do as well. However, there IS a workaround, although it's highly inconvienient: After removing your tones via iToner, you can re-sync them and they will work, but then everytime you need to sync your phone you will get the same error messages. If you really rely on your iToner ringtones, and you don't sync your phone often, it might be worth the inconveinience. I've decided to just use the built-in tones for now, and wait for an update from Ambrosia. And of course, there's always GarageBand for making ringtones, but I'm just going to wait it out.

Mike,

I actually got the App Ringtone Editor Pro. I started using it and find that it works way better than iToner. It syncs in conjunction with iTunes and is compatible with the new operation system. So far no issues. I find it easier to edit and save ringtones. I may just forget about iToner. We will see. But thanks for you help on this issue. I appreciate it.

Hi James...

First I'm getting the "sync session failed to finish" error message. Right now I am trying to restore my iPhone 4. I've got the new iTunes and the iPhone iOS 5 update. Hopefully it works. Nothing else has. There is nothing remaining on my phone to uncheck. This is so incredibly frustrating.

As for ringtones, let me give you a tip. If you can find any audio editing software in which you can remove a clipping of a tune or sound you would like for a ringtone, simply edit the audio to make it sound like the way you want, then import it into iTunes. Then right click on the tone and choose "create ACC version". Once iTunes converts the audio to an ACC version, drag it to the desktop.

Next, open any folder and go to the ORGANIZE option on the upper left corner of the window. Click the "Folder and Search Options". Click on the "view" tab, and uncheck the "hide extentions for known file types." What this does is allow for you to see the file extention, and it allows you to change it.

If you look at the song bit you dragged to the desktop, you can see that file exention is ".m4a". Change the file extention to ".m4r." You now have a ringtone. Double click it to enter it into iTunes, and sync your iphone. Your created ringtone will show up in your phone's ringtones.

I have hundreds of ringtoness, and I have not bought a single one. You can email me at dennismichaeltiffany@rocketmail.com for other suggestions.

And if anyone can figure out how to fix my phone, I would appreciate some feedback, thanks.

I'm using Iphone 3GS and upgraded from ios 4.3.3 to ios 5.0.1, i got the 'couldn't be synced' from itunes but now it's all fine, what i did: unchecking photos and apps and then checked it again. I was thinking that unchecking apps meant i'd lose my saved games so i stopped the sync. next time i plugged my iphone to itunes, it all went normal.

With help on another forum, I finally fixed my instance of this.

Turns out some problem/corruption in the phone's photo database caused the sync to fail. But, you cannot remove photos synced from the computer's Photos app without syncing. So it's a chicken/egg problem.

I enabled iCloud Photo Library on the phone, which removes your local copies and uploads them to iCloud. Once all the photos were removed, I could then backup and sync without any errors. Then, I could set the photos I want on my phone and all is good.

I'm hoping the sync/backup software could be more robust, as well as improving the error dialogs (eg. *why* did the sync fail?)
