Mac Mail 5 Lion - IMAP connection problem

I have Mail 5 configured with several accounts, POP and IMAP. All works fine with one important exception . . . my work IMAP account does not check for mail except when the application is initially opened. The other IMAP and POP accounts update fine.

I have deleted the account, re-booted my MacBook Pro 13 and then re-installed the account with no success. If I close and restart the application, I get mail but only at application start, and only with this one IMAP account.

I upgraded from Snow Leopard, clean migration with just a few problem, with this being the biggest pain. My IT looked at it and are stumped as they deleted/re-sinstalled the account w/ similar lack of success.

Any ideas?

OK I found this and applied it to my Mail and so far it works.

Incoming

Server = imap.mail.yahoo.com

Type = IMAP

Username = xxxx@yahoo.com (xxxx@btinternet.com also worked fine for me)

Password = as normal

Security = SSL

Port = 993

Outgoing

Server = smtp.mail.yahoo.com

Type = SMTP

Username = xxxx@yahoo.com (xxxx@btinternet.com also worked fine for me)

Password = as normal

Security = SSL

Port = 465

I have found out that its since the partnering of Yahoo and BT that you can have IMAP on the Yahoo servers but not on btinternet servers which is what I was on. Mainly as my address at BT internet was sold to spammers a number of years ago by a so called bona fide company. Since then I only use it where I may have unimportant dealings such as newsletter signup's etc and anywhere I know it to be not so secure because of the staff.

Anyway I digress. It is working on IMAP for me and will see how it goes through the day.

Hi Michael - I tried your suggesting posted on August 4th and created a gmx account, sent test emails, and Mac Mail connects find to GMX. The IMAP accounts I'm having problems with are thru GoDaddy.com. GoDaddy insists the problem is the Apple and Mac Mail...but the GMX account works fine...so maybe it is GoDaddy. Any further suggestions?

Again, Mac Mail doesn't see there are new messages on the GoDaddy mail servers until I quit Mail and restart. Not sure why quiting and restarting works but selecting "get new mail" while Mail is running doesn't work.

Thanks.

OK, the solution to this problem for me, ultimately, was to change the 'Check for new messages' value in Mail general Preferences to 15 minutes rather than the 5 minutes that was set before. This has cured the problem of not picking up new messages. This may be peculiar to BTinternet, my ISP, I have not done any investigation into other providers.

Deleting the passwords from the Keychain and then relaunching Mail seems to have resolved it for me. (HD > Applications > Utilities > Keychain Accesss).

I was having the same issues as above, where messages showed up temporarily. The inbox for my IMAP account even indicated that there were unread messages (a number next to the name of the account in the list of mailboxes) but none showed up when I clicked on the mailbox.

What is also strange is that the problem didn't happen in Mail running in iOS on my iPhone an iPad.

I'll write a follow up post if the issue returns.

Meanwhile, thanks for the info!

THANK YOU SO MUCH! So far, deleting the IMAP passwords in the keychain worked for me. I had gone for months looking for a solution to random emails popping into my inbox and then disappearing. The only workaround I could find was to "rebuild" my inbox every so often throughout the day to make sure I wasn't missing any emails. And I also noticed that this wasn't a problem with my iPhone. This is obviously an Apple issue since it's not a problem on all devices. My email host is GoDaddy.
