Spell Check in Mail

Since upgrading to Lion after spell checking an email prior to sending, the spell check box stays on screen after the email has gone.

In SL this box disappeared as the mail was sent.

Is there a setting to get this to act like it did on SL?

Thanks,

John

Have you found a solution?

Recently upgraded to 10.8.5 on an iMac and am experiencing this EXACT issue in my mail account. I am using a gmail account. Is everyone else with this problem using gmail?

If I move the curser into the body of the email to manually correct something, WHILE spellcheck is running, the email just FLIES out and gets sent prematurely! I do not hit "send," because the spell check is NOT FINISHED conducting its check. It sends prematurely.

This is a bizarre development. Since i have used the Mail program on this same imac for years, I have never experienced anyting like this. Only started seeing this regularly with the OS upgrade to 10.8.5.

Needless to say, far too many of my emails are being sent without proper editing! Please HELP! 😟 I do not want to be forced to use web-based email, but that's where I am headed!

Per Glenn's suggestion , I have looked for something called a "User Library" in Finder. I cannot locate such a folder. Even tried searching for it using "Spotlight" but no success. Does nayone have a fix? I was trying to locate a .plist file. When I searched i found NUMEROUS files containing that name. Thats as far as I got.

Thanks in advance !

Everything still screwed up for me, nothing works like it used to since the "downgrade" to Lion. You can find the library on finder - click the Go" menu on the tool bar in finder and press the Option key - you will see Library pop up then you can select it, it is normally hidden.

I've tried everything and it is all still screwed up. The only thing that works now is extra vigilance.

I am an advanced user, and have experienced the exact same problem with both Mountain Lion and Mavericks, with different user accounts, on a Macbook Pro, a Macbook Air and an iMac. I don't think it's anything to do with user settings or individual glitches, it seems to be a systemic problem which incredibly Apple have still not fixed. Absolutely maddening.

Oxygenee,

Sorry to hear that. But have you FOUND a fix? If you are an advanced user, do you happen to know the answer to my question about DELETING old .plist files? Does that FIX the problem? Would really appreciate ANY fix for this. Email is probably one of the MOST-used Mac functions. This Spell-check problem is undesireable and unacceptable for so many users !

Dear Apple (RIP Steve) you are screwing up big time... just take a look at your stock value!

The Spell Check module just does NOT work correctly. This premature send thing using the space bar or correcting directly to the email while the spell check box is open is absolute rubbish that you refuse to acknowldge and fix such an awful bug!

In addition the spelling module on the system is awful.. often suggesting the oddest word first and very often ommiting the MOST obvious word that I misspelled. Also no spell check exists for composing THIS message in my Chrome browser using ML. Why not?? Copy - paste in Notes or Mail -spell check - then Copy-Paste back into this window. really??? Rubbish Apple.

Read these messages and fix it!!

Happening for and my colleague (Macbook Air and Macbook Pro respectively). During spell check, apple mail just sends before I finish. I find it mainly when I have gone over the original spell check and I am going over again, to make futher changes or amendments. We both use Mavericks. Also, can't believe Apple havent acknowledged the bug that exists. It occurs to me we should start a new thread with OS Mavericks listed because this one has its origins in Mountain Lion and it may not be on their radar.

I agree that a NEW thread under Mavericks makes a lot of sense, as this matter is NOT going away. I continue to wrestle with it, and have TURNED OFF spell check in Mail -->Preferences.

Click "Composing" then click "Check Spelling" to get a drop-down menu. Select "as I type" instead of "when I SEND" While this is NOT fixing the problem (far from it) it does eliminate the embarrassing situation of having a communication SEND before you are actually ready to send it. 😠

It all makes this user very angry !

Starting a new thread in Mavericks is a good idea. If someone does so, please post a link in this thread so we can follow and add our comments (or post a link back to this thread so the Mavericks folks can see it).

It might also help if a number of us who've experienced this issue report the bug to http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html .

Getting reports of the same problem at the same time might allow the issue to percolate up to the top of someone's stack (maybe - I don't have a clue how the issues get prioritized for repairs).
