Kernel: IOSurface buffer allocation size is zero

I tend to receive the above message when listening to Itunes, this message can cause itunes to pause the music and sometimes cause the whole system to crash. Although it does not affect spotify.

I have only recently found out what the problem is, this problem has been going on for a long time. it does get annoying after sometime that your music pauses.

The list of text below has been copied from my Kernel.log and shows that this problem is quite prominent.

Would there be a olution to this? I have previously reinstalled my Operating system, after the reinstallation the problem occurs again. Even after an upgrade to OS X Lion the problem is still there

I finally got rid of this insidious message by using only OmniWeb (5.11.1 sneaky peek) and Camino (2.09) as my browsers. I abandoned both Safari and Chrome and have never seen this message again, 4 days now. Installing the newest Flash player (today's build) did no good when using Safari or Chrome when I tried both of them again today. No biggie as I prefer OmniWeb anyway. I just forgot how good it is. It is again my default browser. hehehe...

Hi folks,

No resolution here, although I got the same kind of behavior on my MBP too.

Perhaps it may be specific to applications that directly function with the kerrnel?

Nov 28, 2011 2:23 AM in response to andrew011

I used to have the exact same issue on a MBP early 2011 and narrowed it down to the Flash plug in.

Uninstalling flash using (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html) has solved the problem for me even if, for now, safari can't playback anything flash related 😟.

For the time being, I'm using Chrome when I need flash related features. Its built in flash engine is less buggy than the adobe one for Mac.

Dec 4, 2011 12:38 PM in response to andrew011

People still having this problem?

Im on a MacBook Pro late 2008 and just today I've had to restart my computer three times by holding down the power button. I have experienced these problems for some time now. At first using Snow Leopard (latest build), it seemed like the computer froze mainly when I was watching video clips on youtube (using a html5-plugin, but flash was installed). To remedy the problem I did a clean install to Lion, did not install flash but the problem only got worse. Even though the problem mostly occur when I watch video clips on youtube (html5 720p), I have also experienced freezes when not watching video clips.

My findings has led me to believe that the problems are not primary related to the flash-plugin, and even though i cant remember if i got the same IOSurface error in Snow Leopard, the symptoms were similar.

I also noticed that the last couple of days (after the Safari 5.1.2 release maybe?) there are no more IOSurface- errors in my kernel.log. After a freeze there is no suspicious activity in the log. Since the IOSurface buffer errors seem to have disappeared from the kernel.log, less people with similar problems will find this thread.

So do you still have the same problems? Found any solution? And does the IOSurface error still appear in the kernel.log?

This is getting really annoying, having to restart my MacBook 2-4 times every day (i use my computer much these days, exams coming up).

Greetings from Norway

Just want to say that I still get these log entries, even after applying the latest Safari update and Adobe Flash update under Lion 7.2. But, I have never seen a crash or a freeze on my late 2006 iMac. At work, we have 3 of these machines and they function just fine. However our 2 2009 iMacs exhibit the message and crashes. It's interesting that the older iMac's seem immune from this problem. It's also interesting that even the AppleCare tech's seem unaware of this problem. Do they monitor this thread? Have any of ya'll called them? If so, what did they tell you?

Dec 4, 2011 1:23 PM in response to andrew011

Ok, so then the Safari update probably did not do anything for the IOSurface error message. I just checked my console and found alot of error messages. I do not know what to look for so I'll just post them here and if anyone think these errors are relevant for my freezes, please speak out. Seems like some of them are connected to NVIDIA and OpenGL:

The com.nvidia.OpenGL messages comes with an extended "log" that opens in TextEdit. Seems it is connected to Safari somehow. And again I must say that I dont know if there is a link between these error-reports and the IOSurface buffer error. Here is the content of the extended log.

I use have both the newest os (10.7.2) and the newest Safari update (5.1.2).

The sudo killall Finder and Dock will restart the Finder and Dock if I'm correct? But doesn't this happen every time I restart my computer? If this is the case I have restarted my Finder and Dock maybe 50 times the last couple of weeks without it helping.

Yesterday something new happened, I left my computer to watch some tv, when I returned my screen was white with a blinking folder with a question mark. A quick google-search revealed that it has something to do with missing (or problems locating) system files. After a restart things were "fine".

I have used a Mac since 10.3 and I have never had such problems as I've had the last six-eight weeks. Really starting to get annoying. On Monday, after my exams, I'll try reinstalling Lion once more, se if it helps.
