OSX Lion, Windows Network Printer

I upgraded to OSX Lion, the process was easy and works well.

The printers I setup with Snow Leopard on the windows network do not function anymore.

When I print the printer goes to pause immediately. Release the job, it goes to pause again.

Oddly before one could browse the network and add printers. That functionality is also gone now.

Some of the printers require authentication the previous OS would allow you to enter your windows network password.

There are other folks also complaining of the same issue. It may have to do with the SMBX that is part of the new OS.

Mac OS X (10.7)

I had exactly this problem and I finally found a solution which worked for me at http://www.teknoids.net/content/re-mac-lion-not-printing-windows-print-server

You can add a printer using cups and it will be ok, just follow this

instructions:

1. Point Safari to http://localhost:631

2. Select top menu "Administration"

3. Select "Add Printer"

4. Authenticate if requested

5. Select "Windows printer via spoolss" and press "Continue"

6. Use the following sintaxe to add the printer

"smb://DOMAIN;LOGIN:PASSWORD@SERVER/PRINTQUEUE" in the "Connection"

field and press "Continue" (replace CAPITALS with your own

configuration)

7. Introduce a name in the "Name" field, for example MyPrinter

8. Select your printer Manufacturer from the "Make" list and press

"Continue"

8. Select your printer Model from the "Model" list and press "Add

Printer"

Frithweaver, you are awesome, and THIS is indeed the answer to my problem! Thank you!!! There is, however, one peculiarity with this solution that people in Enterprise-level AD environments will need to know about:

When adding the printer throught the CUPS interface per your instructions, you MUST use the SHORT name of the domain for it to work. So, for example, when I first tried your sytax I entered the fully qualiified domain name for our AD system as follows:

"smb://accounts.ad.wustl.edu;USERNAME:PASSWORD@stsops.rts.wustl.edu/WUSTLprint"

The above did NOT WORK. What did work is:

"smb://accounts;USERNAME:PASSWORD@stsops.rts.wustl.edu/WUSTLprint"

NOTE: I had to enter our domain as simply "accounts" rather than the full name of "accounts.ad.wustl.edu" in order for this to work and for Mac OS Lion to send the credential to our Windows print server properly. I can hardly believe that using the short name works, and the long name doesn't but I've now tested is multiple times on multiple Lion computers and that is the answer.

So again, you do exactly the steps that you posted, but you MUST use the SHORT domain name.

Thank you again!!!

Hi

I hope this can be of some use to someone.

I have a new MBA and tried to connect to a networked HP6100 connected to a desktop running Vista. No success untill I tried the following:

connect the printer to the MBA via USB - Lion downloaded and set itself up to use it.

successfuly printed a test page.

reconnected the printer to the desktop

Back on the MBA & connected to my home network - found the printer in printer preferences and it set itself up again.

I couldnt find the test page buton and the ink levels wouldn't show but scuccess fully printed off a random document. It asked me for the username & password of the login on the desktop as part of the print procedure.

Hope this is some help to somebody.

Howie

Thank you Frithweaver!

You can even think that further and use this Info to setup the Windows SMB printers right from the GUI. When asked for the username, you just enter domain;username instead of domain\username as you would usually do. (Tested and works).

This counts for the "Netbios" Domain name (Short domain name, no dots).

Where you already have printers installed and migrated to Lion, you should as well be able to simply change the username in that fashion on the keyring...

Hope that helps.

I had the very same problem with Windows shared network printers till few minutes ago and today I decided to change my domain password removing some "special characters" like \ / @ ecc... and I was "magically" able to print again.

Since there is no problem connecting to any shared network directory I suspect there is a communication problem when it comes to SMB/CUPS.

This SOLVED THE PROBLEM:

If you have an iMac and and you are trying to connect to a printer connected to a Windows 7 PC, follow the directions on this link precisely and your problem is solved. I only had to make one slight change to the driver selection , which was advised if the selection of a generic printer driver did not work. In my case I have an HP printer and selected HP LaserJet Series PCL 4/5 and voila! Printing!
