File sharing problem between Windows 7 & Lion

I am running a windows 7 laptop and my mac mini with 10.7.

I have a single file share setup on the mac which is NTFS based (confirmed permissions are read/write).

I am unable to connect to the Mac from the windows computer. When I enter \\192.168.1.102\sharename I am prompt to enter the mac's login account info. When I enter the only account info I have it stays in a loop and I never log in. It was working fine in Snow Leo.

Here is what I am also seeing on the File sharing prefs on the mac:

User uploaded file

Even after entering the correct password several times, it still tells me its incorrect. I have reset the password a couple of times to make sure it wasn't that and rebooted a few times and still the same thing.

Other things I have tried"

- Disabled firewall on the Mac

- Disabled / Enabled File sharing and removing / readding the shares again (rebooting afterwards)

All didn't make any difference.

Not sure why it works on Snow and now not on Lion.

Please help!

Thanks,

Mac mini, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

Hi Guys,

Long story short, check out either:

DAVE v9.0 | Thursby Software

or

The MacPorts Project -- Home

Just spoke to an extremely helpful Apple support guy (they exist) and was told, off the record, that there's no (useful) incoming SMB support for Lion, and that's pretty much the way it's going to stay.

I'm using CAD packages on a desktop (iMac 27, Win7 through bootcamp) and accessing all my design files from my laptop (MBP, Lion) over ethernet. With Snow Leopard the process was smooth and reliable, but Lion screwed everything. I've just installed DAVE and now I'm back up and running and grinning from ear to ear. Furthermore, the office now has 3x iMac 27's which are no longer paperweights, and we're no longer relying on Parallels to run our resource hungry CAD packages!

I really hope this solution saves people some frustration, as it's driven me crazy.

No, DAVE isn't a free solution (far from it!) but it works. It costs significantly less than what we've already burned in lost productivity and fixing holes in the office wall when "The Hulk who is sick of dealing with Win7/OSX compatibility BS" is unleashed.

Good luck all!

I had the same problem however I managed to solve the issue as follows...

In Lion first creat a new user and make it a sharing only user by changing the account type to sharing only.

I named mine family...

put in a password...

nickname...

etc...

once you have created your sharing only user goto your sharing tab in system prefs...

in sharing options turn on SMB and your new sahring only account that you made

enter the pasword you created for it.

you then share the folders that you wish by adding them to the share side

and then add the user you created for each folder to the user side along with permisions eg read write...

enable your fileshare and find it under network in windows 7

Windows 7 will ask you for a password to access your share.

you have to use a different user and then use your sign in for your created user in lion and password.

tell windows to remember...

And now you will only see your intended shared folders with the proper permisions active.

hope that helped.

OK THE REAL SIMPLE METHOD:

A little Birdy told me Samba (SMB) sharing has been somehow been crippled in OSX Lion due to Licensing issues.

This worked for me and its dead simple (and also fully reversible):

Install a little gem of an app called SMBUp. It a fully automated Samba 3 install that disables Apple's effort.

Avalible here:

www.eduo.info/apps/smbup

I just used the default settings for everything. Once the server is up and running you can also quit SMBUp as well.

Installed 10.7.3 over the weekend, uninstalled DAVE and things are working as they should (SMB fileshare to Win7 worked with 10.7.2 and DAVE9.0, but not without DAVE installed)

*NOTE: I cannot guarentee that 10.7.3 is the end of all problems, and that the process of installing/uninstalling DAVE didn't toggle a bit somewhere which helped 10.7.3 get across the line...*

If anyone finds that by simply updating from 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 puts an end to our SMB filesharing woes, please post!

Thanks Mickwah . . .

It worked for me when I updated to 10.7.3. I have always been able to see my Win 7 PC from my Mac, but had never been able to see my Mac on the Windows machine. After trying every suggestion I could find on the internet I had given up and not even tried for the last 6 months.

Now that I can finally see the Mac, I've got a couple of new problems (hey, at least I'm part way there!).

Problem #1. I can see and access the contents of the Documents folder for my Mac Administrative User, but not my Mac Standard User (I can see and access the Public folder contents for both users). If I click "Get Info" on these two users, the Standard user shows as being shared, but the Administrative user has no check mark in either the Shared or Locked box. When I go to Sharing in system preferences on the Mac, the Standard User-Documents appears with the proper permissions and on the page where you check SMB, both the Standard and Administrative Users are checked and the passowrds for both accounts were accepted. I kept getting "Incorrect Password" prior to the 10.7.3 Upadate.
Problem #2. On my Windows machine, I have to go to the Run Command and enter \\workgroup.home in order to see my Mac Folders. However, if I close Windows Explorer, my connection to the Mac is lost and I have to go through the Run command exercise again. Also, need to use Run Command when I boot up for the day. Another computer on the network as well as my own machine shows up under the Network category in Windows Explorer all the time without me having to do anything.
Any suggestions on these two issues. Thanks.

So it looks like some are able to get the file sharing to work, and some are not.

I would like to update to Lion again to take advantge of all the features it offers, but really need to be able to access the shares on my Mac from my Windows computers.

Is there 1 (or more) prooven fix(s) that will resolve this? Mickwah's comments indicate that the Apple reps are also mentioning that SMB support is limited.

I'd rather not spend additional $ to get the SMB working exactly the way it is now in SL.

Thanks!

Here's a fix that worked for me.

 1. On the Mac, go to the Network preferences panel.
 2. Go to the WINS tab
 3. Under NetBIOS name, enter the name of the mac
 4. Under Workgroup, enter the name of the domain your PC is on
 5. Hit OK

In our case this made it possible to connect using the Trickyways instructions. Maybe this is a problem specific to users on a Microsoft Domain?
