Converting video to play on apple tv

Hi, I have ordered an Apple tv 2. So i am wanting to convert the many video files on my PC to mp4 so i can put them in iTunes.

My question is, can anyone recommend a good (fast if poss) program to do the converting.

I have spent ages on google trying to find somthing, but there is quite frankly a lot of crap there and i dont have time go through it all.

Surely some of you good people can point me in the right direction.

Thanks

Ross.

AVI is a very old container format developed and Microsoft by Microsoft twenty years ago, it remains somewhat popular with some camera producers for one reason or another but is best avoided. It can potentially contain compression types that can no longer be decompressed by any modern software, although somewhat unlikely this should be remembered and any claims that particular software can handle any AVI should be viewed with skepticism.

Resolution does matter ultimately, but not when it comes to choosing the software you are going to work with.

I believe that camera uses MJPEG/WAV, mpegstreamclip is a fine choice for conversion.

I'd tend to ensure that the mpeg2 QuickTime playback component is required before buying it (one reason why I keep mentioning we need to know what compression is used), although the OP's comments that they produce files with no video is s symptom of trying to convert mpeg2 without the playback component.

I'm not entirely sure but I think there might be a free alternative to the QuickTime component available for windows users.

In the screen shot above from Squared 5 website, please note: KL QuickTime Alternative is a free unofficial distribution of QuickTime. It has a quite smaller installer (less than 15 MB) and includes MPEG-2 decoding in the "Additional plugins".

I would assume it's Windows compatible because it's on the window version page.

I should have read that myself a while back before I spent the $20 on the plugin
