Pay $29 for upgrade now have to pay for compatible scanner/camera etc

So, I just upgraded to the new Lion OS. Thought it would be a good thing. Now my scanner won't work. Come to find out that I cannot update the drivers to the new Lion OS supported drivers cause they don't exist. My Photoshop won't work either. So, basically I paid a low price for a great upgrade, but now I am going to have to pay even more to get new compatible accessories. Anyone else in this same boat?

No, because I checked all of my peripherals and software prior to upgrading to make sure they were up to date and would work with Lion, and I long ago had purged/replaced any PowerPC apps.

I'd check with whoever made your scanner and see if/when they are going to release new drivers/software to work with Lion. Must be a fairly old version of Photoshop because the last 2 or 3 releases were Universal and will work with Lion.

You could erase your drive and reload SL from your disks/backup.

I have a CanoScan 8400F and have it working perfectly under Lion. I'll try to explain what I did:

First you need drivers and software, go here:

http://usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/scanners/canoscan_series

Select the Canoscan 4400F (YES 4400F) drivers and software, select Mac OSX 10.7 and download the following SOFTWARE (NOT Drivers):

CanoScan Toolbox 5.0 Opener (Mac OS X 10.6/10...

Next select the CanoScan 8400F drivers and software, select Mac OSX (NOT OSX 10.6, JUST OSX) and download the following DRIVER:

8400F Scanner Driver Ver. 10.2.4.1X (Mac OS X...

File Name: 8400fosx10241en.dmg

Next, still in the CanoScan 8400F drivers and software, select Mac OSX 10.6 and download the following SOFTWARE:

CanoScan Toolbox Ver. 4.9.3.4X (Mac OS X 10.2...

File Name: cstbosx4934ej4.dmg

You can open all of these images, but DO NOT INSTALL ANYTHING YET.

Turn off your scanner, unplug the power (yes the power) and unplug the USB cable from the scanner.

Install:

8400F Scanner Driver Ver. 10.2.4.1X (Mac OS X...

File Name: 8400fosx10241en.dmg

Next install:

CanoScan Toolbox Ver. 4.9.3.4X (Mac OS X 10.2...

File Name: cstbosx4934ej4.dmg

Restart your computer.

Plug the power and USB cable into the scanner and turn the scanner on.

Open Image Capture in your applications folder - The 8400F should show up, if not; with Image Capture still open, unplug and then replug the USB cable in (scanner still turned on).

With Image Capture open and the 8400F showing, run the last program you downloaded:

CanoScan Toolbox 5.0 Opener (Mac OS X 10.6/10...

You should be able to close Image Capture and open CanoScan Toolbox. Everything works, even the buttons on the scanner.

I have done this on a virgin install of Lion on an external drive, and it works there also.

Hope this works for you !!

I also wish to thank you Rabrack. I used your work around for my 9950F (substituting the 9950F drivers for the 8400F) and lo and behold I am back in action with a working toolbox (labeled 4.9) all of which works. Going to be interesting to see what (if any) past scanners Cannon chooses to write new drivers for to accomdate Lion.

Anyways, great job on working this one out....

Glad this worked out for you and hopefully others with "Unsupported" CanoScan scaners. The first thing I did was look at the latest driver's and software for my scanner. Noticed that they were all "universal" and not Power PC. Next I checked some of the "Supported" scanners and the software/drivers for Lion (10.7) were the the same version as listed for Snow Leopard or older OSX's. The only difference being the "Canoscan Toolbox 5.0 Opener", which in the instructions stated that the scanner must be set up in Image Capture first. I got out my scanner manual where it stated that the power and USB cable must be disconnected before installing the software/drivers, and just put it all together. I tried just reinstalling the software/drivers but the Toolbox software would not work until I ran Image Capture and the Toolbox Opener. Don't know what it does, but everything worked after that. Maybe someone with more knowledge than I can see what it actually does.

Glad it helped.

Now trying to get my Canon Selphy CP730 working. All the drivers are Universal, but the installer is Power PC.

Good to see the successes others have had.

I have an iMac intel 21.5-inch, mid 2011, software Mac OS X Lion 10.7 (11A511a)

Unfortunately when i try the installation fails when I open Image Capture as the Canon 8400F scanner does not show up on the left hand side.

Neither does anything else, although all I have connected, via local airport network is an Epson NX515 printer/scanner.

The network also allows me to share with my MacBook
