iPhone Backup Hang - Fix without Restore?

I have an 16GB iPhone 3GS (model MB715LL) with iOS version 4.3.4. I've been successfully synching/backing up the phone for months with the same set up, most recently with iTunes version 10.4.0.80 running on Windows XP SP3 with all current security patches. Recently, however, iTunes hangs during a synch when trying to do a backup (I've gone so far as to leave it on all night just to verify that it's just not taking a long time for some reason). I've tried obvious things like closing everything on the phone, restarting, and doing a reboot on the computer but the backup continues to hang.

The sequence I see is this:

  1. Plug in the phone (genuine Apple iPhone USB connector)
  2. Dialog box reminding me that iOS version 4.3.5 is available (I had previously downloaded it). I choose "Later" although choosing "Update" makes no difference in the hanging.
  3. I click my device and choose "Sync"
  4. The status at the top goes through the normal pre-stuff (Starting, Backing up, Preparing to sync, etc...)
  5. The status gets to 'Syncing "Paul's iPhone" (Step 1 of 3)' <new line> "Backing up" and the "bar" gets about 1/2" wide and never moves beyond there....

I've looked online and the "fix" to this problem with iTunes seems to be to restore the iPhone to the factory settings and then restore from the last backup. That may work, however, I would prefer a solution that actually fixes the problem. It is annoying that I (and many other iPhone users experiencing the same issue over & over again) should have to lose a bunch of data (calendar entries, text messages, etc...) since my last backup because no one seems to know how (or care) to fix this reccuring problem.

Is there a way to fix or troubleshoot this issue without "punting" and restoring the iPhone and losing data since the last backup?

Here's the log from the diagnostics test if that helps (skipping the CD/DVD tests):

I asusme you mean on the phone. What happens when you try to open iTunes or the app store?

Have you tried powering off the phone, then rebooting? Hold the POWER button until "Slide to power off" appears, then slide and wait for the spinning disc to go away. Then hold HOME and SLEEP at the same time until the Apple logo appears.

If you still have a problem with iTunes or App Store on the phone try and different app. If other apps work that narrows the problem. Double-press the HOME button, then hold any of the apps that appear on the Quick Launch ribbon at the bottom of the screen until "-" appears on all of them. Then tap the "-" on each item to remove it from memory. When most of the apps are gone try the store apps again.

If they still don't work tap Settings, then Store and verify that you are logged in. Assuming you are log out, back out of Settings and try again with the store icons. Then go back to Settings and log in again.

BTW, all of this assumes that your phone is not jailbroken. If it is there are other issues to explore.

Thank you, thank you......... I have nearly been having a nervous break-down over the last few days, trying to sync my phone. Upgraded phone to 5.0 at the Istore as takes too long to download software on slow SA lines and as I also had upgraded to new Itunes, the thing would not sync(husband tired of me shouting at computer!!!) ........so........for dumb people like me:

I did the following:

Go to the Start button(bottom left of screen)

Go to run

Type in - netsh winsock reset

I was nervous..... waited for machine to blow up or everything to vanish.... all fine..:-)

reboot

.......... and it all works...... backed up and apps and music all synced............

Whew....... thank goodness for these forums...... thank you apple community, wherever you are in the world!

😀

This problem is quite common, but I have not been able to figure out what causes it. My best bet is that it's a USB issue, and I have found a workaround that makes synchronising possible when all else fails. For the record, I have tried all of the potential solutions on these forums without lasting success. Here's what worked for me.

(Windows 7 32bit, iPhone 4S, iTunes 10.6.1.7)

First of all, make sure you have a good wi-fi signal in the region of the PC you are syncing with. Then -

1) Start iTunes.

2) Connect phone via USB.

3) Left click on phone in iTunes.

4) On the Summary page check "Sync with this phone over Wi Fi"

5) On the phone go to Settings>General>iTunes wi-fi sync

6) Tap on Sync now.

The phone should sync via wi-fi, even though it is connected via USB. It didn't seem any slower to me than syncing via the cable, and more importantly it worked, and the backup went smoothly. I've tried it several times now with no problems.

Also, if you have a lot of apps you need to synchronise or you are re-arranging the app windows using iTunes you can sync in the normal way from the PC if you do it immediately after the wi-fi sync, because iTunes does not run the backup again. It probably won't run two backups within a few minutes of one another.

It's all a bit of a fiddle, and Apple/MS needs to get a fix for it, but if this method works for you at least you have a good backup should you flush your phone down the toilet!

Good luck!

adsaero, I'm facing the exact same problem. I've upgraded my iTunes because I was asked to do that in order to be able to update my iPhone software from 4.3 to 5.1. Now everytime I try t update the software, the first step is backup and it freezes. I've tried the steps which seemed to have worked with everyone, but it didn't work. Now, I'm backing up my iPhone since i've deleted all the previous backups but it's taking forever.

Can anyone help please ?!?!?
