MobileMe smtp server keeps going offline

I have 11 email accounts (due to the consulting work I do) with various services (Gmail, AOL, Exchange, etc.) Recently, the only mailbox I'm having problems with is MobileMe! My outbound messages are stuck in Send mode and when I check, I find that the SMTP server is offline. I reenter the password info, try checking and unchecking SSL, etc. and sometimes it works, and other times it doesn't. I recently upgraded to Liion but can't say for sure that the problem started with the upgrade, but it is a very recent phenomenon as I would have noticed it earlier. MobileMe is my most frequently used mailbox.

ok So Grey my issue is that I have both the .mac and .me addresses in the field however if I attempt to do what you are suggesting and save changes it keeps saying the incoming mail server must be filled in. The field however is grayed out and I cannot edit it therefore I cannot make the change. Suggestions. This only happened after upgrade to 10.7.2 and the starting of icloud. I am assuming this may be due to overload and on another forum peeps suggested it just rectified itself over time. I can receive mail on my ipad when sent to my .mac addy but my mail app in lion is offline for .mac

First—you have already "lost" your .mac address, but it's still functional. Yes, that's a paradox. You didn't have a choice, and it doesn't matter anyway (see my previous posts). You will still—and in perpetuity—receive mail addressed to yourname@mac.com, but outgoing mail—either new mail or replies—will show yourname@me.com as the sender. So transitioning to iCloud isn't going to invalidate your mac.com / me.com address — and were you a new user of iCloud, you'd have to create a me.com identity.

As far as the transition goes: I have updated my Lion machines to 10.7.2 but I have not "joined" iCloud yet, nor updated my iPhone to iOS5, and in no rush to do either.

So right now I'm of no help to you, except for some speculation (below). When I make the switch I'll be posting my experience here.

Before I begin speculating: Did you upgrade the iPad to iOS5?

And just to confirm: in Mail > Preferences > Account Information (on the Lion Mac) you deleted yourname@mac.com, and left yourname@me.com in the Email Address field, yes? Make sure there are no spaces in front of yourname@me.com in that field.

So since we last typed...My mail (like they mentioned in the other forum posts) just eventually reconciled itself. I didn't have to lose the .mac in the pane (the one with the .mac and .me addy) in order for that to happen. When I did the edit previously as you instructed I did not leave any spaces but at that time no matter what I did that incoming mail server stayed grayed out no edit possible.

It looks like you don't have to do anything you just gotta let mac/me mail sort itself out. I did update my ipad to ios5. I also figured out in order to be prompted on my mac to move my account to Icloud one must log in with their mobile me information and not just their itunes info (should they be different) because otherwise I did not know how to move without making a new email addy (which I did not want to do)

Due to overloaded servers with the masses upgrading...they are suspending peeps moving over to icloud for the time being. Given that I know have my mail working again...I am no rush to get over to icloud. I just thought that was necessary for a sec.

Thanks for your help and if I can clarify anything let me know.

Hi. I hope you can help me, Grey. I am not exactly computer savvy. I have a related problem to the ones in this thread--at least I think I do. I'm on an "older" MacBook(with OS X Tiger) and have a (now called) MobileMe account for email. I use the mac.com addy.

I have been getting some kind of smtp message with some of my outgoing emails lately-this happens about once a year, sometimes on stuff I've forwarded from my work's email (not anything Mac), sometimes on stuff I have generated on my MacBook. I could not discern a pattern. Unfortunately, I never fully read the error message, but would click "continue" and most times, it would still send. I realized this wasn't the smartest thing I could be doing, so I mentioned to someone who said perhaps my email had been corrupted. Given that this is mac.com, I am doubtful. Then I remembered about the MobileMe stuff and came looking for help.

Thing is, I do NOT have both email thingies in my account--I only have mac.com. For all I know I got rid of me.com back when it first came out--but I am not one to fiddle with standard settings. (I'm only a few steps away from those who believe that hitting a button will blow the whole computer up....). This is long-winded, sorry. What I'm asking is this: do I just go into the me email settings and change over to XXXXX@me.com? Or should I wait until the stmp issue/error message comes up again, post it here for clarification before doing anything permanent? I understand the dual nature of the me/mac.com stuff and am fine with it, now that you explained it. I'm just not sure if doing that will solve this problem/ annoyance.

Also, I have never been able to access my email remotely (that is, when using any computer except my macbook). I know this is off topic, but any clue as to why (besides me being an idiot). Thanks.
