Any one know about Wi-Fi and iPad

Hi

Sorry if anyone has read my previous postings about this but I have not had any replys and I have been trying to sort it out for two days now. The problem is that my iPadseems to be connecting ot my iMac because theere is a tic by the name I use but I can not get on to the internet. And when I go to Network on my iMac under automatic it shows "Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.21.127 and will not be able to connect to the Internet." Then if I change the Location it then shows "Wi-Fi is connected to George Hilton’s iMac and has the IP address 192.168.150.196." And in the Network Name I have George Hilton's iMac. But still can not connect to the internet from the iPad. All so on the iPad under General - Network it says "Not Available." I seem to remember when I got the iPad all I had to do was to input some numbers, how can I get back to the start and input the numbers?

This is one of those occasions when it would really help to be able to see what you see. At this point I'm inclinded to say that it might be best to start from the beginning. By this I mean you should do the following:

  1. On your iPad, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the blue arrow to the right of your iMac's network name (I think that should be "George Hiltons iMac". From the screen that shows the details of this network press the "Forget this network" button. Put the iPad to sleep for the moment.
  2. On your iMac, go to Settings > Network, click the Locations drop-down menu and select "Edit Locations". Click the + button to add a new Location and give it a name, e.g. Test.
  3. On your iMac, go to Settings > Sharing and select Internet Sharing. Ensure that "Share your connection from" is set to Ethernet and select "To computers using" Wi-Fi. You should be able to select the checkbox for Internet Sharing and a dialog will appear asking if you are sure you want to start Internet sharing. Click Start. The Wi-Fi icon on the menu bar of your iMac should now change to a grey icon with an arrow indicating that Internet sharing via Wi-Fi is now enabled.
  4. Back on your iPad, select Settings > Wi-Fi and select your iMac's Wi-Fi network. After a few seconds it should connect and all, in theory, should be OK.

If your iPad still won't connect to the Internet then can you take a screenshot of the details of the Wi-Fi network it is connected to and post it here? If you don't know how to take screenshots on your iPad then it is done by holding down the Home button and clicking the Sleep button (you should hear a sound like a camera shutter). The screenshot will be stored in your Camera Roll and accessed through something like iPhoto.

In answer to your question, yes, I know how to set a manual IP address on both the iMac and iPad but I'm not convinced that doing so will help yet. Generally speaking you want to let both the iMac and iPad sort this stuff out themselves.

Hi Marcus

the arrow is back and in network name it says internet sharing on but it is grayed out and under Status connected it says 'Wi-Fi is connected to George Hilton’s iMac and has the IP address 192.168.150.150." And on th eiPad it shows it is connected to George Hilton's iMac. and when I go to Safari it seems to be loading very slow because I asked for Apples site in the Uk and the iPad is showing a list of app;e departments and a box for what looks like a photo with nothing in. strange

Hi again Marcus

There are three snap shots I would like to send you but how do I send a snap shot over the discussions pages, when I click on the icon of a camara I get a full page that is dimed and there is nothing to say send, also can I send more than one snapshot?.

Should it say in network "Wi-Fi is connected to George Hilton’s iMac. and has the IP address 192.168.150.196." or should it say connected to my iPad?

The first time I tried using the Insert Image function of the Support Communities it didn't work for me but now it seems to be fine. Click the "Insert Image" icon, in the "From your Computer" tab, select "Choose File" and navigate to the image file your want to upload on your hard drive. Once it has been selected you should be able to click the "Insert image" button and complete the upload.

With respect to what things should say where, it would help if you can tell me precisely where you are seeing the messages, particularly as to which device (iMac or iPad) you are seeing it on.

If you give me a reply to the email I sent to you then maybe we can organise a Screen Share over iChat. I've never tried using this but maybe it would resolve the problem that I'm not sure where you are seeing messages.
