Any one know about Wi-Fi and iPad

Hi

Sorry if anyone has read my previous postings about this but I have not had any replys and I have been trying to sort it out for two days now. The problem is that my iPadseems to be connecting ot my iMac because theere is a tic by the name I use but I can not get on to the internet. And when I go to Network on my iMac under automatic it shows "Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.21.127 and will not be able to connect to the Internet." Then if I change the Location it then shows "Wi-Fi is connected to George Hilton’s iMac and has the IP address 192.168.150.196." And in the Network Name I have George Hilton's iMac. But still can not connect to the internet from the iPad. All so on the iPad under General - Network it says "Not Available." I seem to remember when I got the iPad all I had to do was to input some numbers, how can I get back to the start and input the numbers?

OK, I've seen your pictures and a couple of things jump out at me, possibly all related to the same thing. In the case of your iMac's Network information for the Wi-Fi (picture #5), yours indicates that it is connected. In contrast, mine shows that it is using a self-assigned IP address. This is not usually a "good thing" but perhaps is correct for Internet Sharing and it seems to work.

Why there is a difference I am not 100% sure but maybe it is not a problem. What really does jump out at me is your picture of your iPad. In that picture your iPad has a Static IP address which has been set to the same as your iMac. My iPhone connects to my iMac using DHCP and that sees to work correctly. Can you set your iPad to use DHCP, let it connect to your iMac and then take another picture of the network settings that the iPad is using? Just in case, it might not be a bad idea to turn the iPad off completely after you make the settings change to use DHCP and then switch it back on after a minute or so.

Indeed, that does not look right. I see no reason why your iPad should not be showing the same IP address as my iPhone, i.e. 10.0.2.2. So, here's the next thought: leaving your iPad setup as it is now, can you post a screenshot of your iMac's Wi-Fi settings by doing the following:

  1. Open System Preferences > Network
  2. Select your Wi-Fi connection and click the Advanced button in the lower-right of the screen.
  3. From the advanced settings window, select TCP/IP and take a screenshot of those settings and repost.

Mine, for example, look like the following.

For the record, in case anyone else has the same problem, I'm honestly not sure what it was precisely that was causing the problem. Aside from ensuring that both the iMac's Wi-Fi connection and the iPad's connection to the shared Wi-Fi network TCP/IP settings were set to use DHCP, we did quite a lot of turning the Internet Sharing on the iMac on/off, resetting the iPad (Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings), and changing the name of the Wi-Fi network broadcasted by the iMac. Additionally, we also changed the Channel and turned off the Security in the Wi-Fi Options of Internet Sharing. I don't know which of these changes ultimately resulted in fixing the matter.

Frankly, I was beginning to think that sacrificing a chicken was the next logical step...
