Mail still forgets passwords

For a long time in Leopard the Mail app failed to remember the password for my mail accounts. I waited for Lion, expecting the problem to be fixed, but alas, it hasn't been. I've done everything recommended in the forums - deleting keychain and mail prefs, changing the password, setting the keychain Access Control to allow all applications to use the password, switching off mail sync in other devices (iPhone, iPad, etc) and of course updating the whole OS to Lion. Any clues what else I can try before I dump Mail altogether and switch to a new mail client? Thanks

Hi Sam. I'm sorry you're still having this problem. I used to have it but it just went away. I can't remember the last time that the annoying jumping mail icon made me want to chuck my Mac out of the window. I know this doesn't help your situation.

I'm on 10.7.5 - which might be different for you.

I don't think I did anything specific other than delete all my keychain entries for all my mail accounts then re-enter them via mail preferences. Be sure to make sure that they stick in mail preferences - sometimes they don't save.

I also changed some of my BT/Yahoo mail account passwords and made sure that they didn't have upper case letters as the first character. This was on the advice of the BT help desk who seemed to be aware of this problem with Mac mail.

I wish I could be more help - I know how frustrating this is. Have you tried creating a new location in Network Preferences with no DNS lookup? I don't know why this might work in your situation - but it sometimes makes my mail work when I'm logged into hotel wifi and have mail problems. Note I'm not a techhie - just trying to help.

Finally - I don't think that Apple staff read these boards. Have you tried contacting Apple support directly? I found them very helpful when I had a problem with Finder.

Good luck with this. Wish I could be more help.

It's June 2014 - and my Outlook for Mac 2011 - running Outlook mail for Gmail - has been forgetting passwords every 3 minutes. Kills me.

Just read through all of these ideas and tried a few already, but the one that did the trick, was deleting the mail account off my Ipad.

It worked!!....for now....

Thank you @H.I and @Ernie for continuing to find the fix.

This problem is so random. I reset the Google App Specific password and sometimes Mail takes it and works right away and then I have no issues for weeks. Suddenly I start getting the pop up about the password issue. I go thru all the steps needed to reset the password and enter a new one in and 5 minutes later it's asking. I just don't use Apple Mail for a few days and then try to enter a another password and that one seems to work for a while. Makes me wonder if this a poke in the eye from Google that will keep happening no matter what we do.

I'm using apple mail program. I gave up trying to use Outlook for anything except my work email which is an Exchange account. If I could drag and drop photos into the Outlook OWA web app I would not even use Outlook for Mac either, it's janky.

I try to use Apple mail for iCloud mail & gmail. iCloud is fine, gmail account In apple mail forgets the password constantly. So I just use the gmail web interface. It would be nice if the mail on my Mac worked like the mail on my phone. The phone never "forgets" the gmail password.
