Logic 9's UI extremely laggy - any fixes?

I've been a pretty happy Logic user since 2004, but lately version 9 has been really cheezing me off. It seems that whenever I'm playing my current project, the user interface becomes completely unresponsive to key commands and mouse clicks, which will be delayed for many seconds, or ignored entirely.

This is a fresh install of Logic Pro 9.1.4, 32-bit, on one of the new Mac minis (dual 2.7GHz i7, 4GB RAM, stock 500GB hard drive), with a PreSonus FireStudio Project. However, this was also happening on my previous system, a 2008 15" unibody MacBook Pro. It was happening a little bit on Snow Leopard but it's gotten much worse under Lion. My MacBook had aftermarket RAM (8GB) and an aftermarket SSD, but everything in the Mini is stock.

It's happening even if I only have one or two tracks, although it seems to be worse if I have any of the various metering plugins running and open, or ChanEQ with the analyzer turned on. I wonder if maybe those plugins aren't handling UI updates correctly, or something.

Just to be clear, I have absolutely no third-party AudioUnits installed, and it's neither a CPU nor an I/O issue (both gauges are pretty much empty, and Activity Monitor shows Logic as taking about 10% of one CPU), and yet it takes anywhere from 3-10 seconds for a simple mouse click to go through.

This is getting EXTREMELY frustrating, especially since the lag seems to always happen at the worst moments (i.e. I'm trying to turn down the volume on a track which suddenly got really loud, and the lack of responsiveness means my ears get blasted and I have to take a break for them to recover before I can start mixing again).

Has anyone else been experiencing this and found a workaround? Is anyone at Apple even paying attention to these issues? I feel like it's the same problem that was being discussed in this thread, which was never resolved: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2396951

That's exactly what I did to come to that conclusion.

but given my experience and diagnosing the particular problem, it seems to me like it's an issue of non-input events (such as window repaints) taking priority over input events, and input events not being serviced until the non-input events complete. If the CPU were being pegged, there would be other symptoms, such as audio stuttering and other applications running slowly. In this case, it is just that input to the UI is being delayed by multiple seconds, and the common situation is that a rapidly-updating plugin display is visible, usually on a second screen.

I probably shouldn't be comparing systems using a different OS. Activity monitor shows fairly heavy CPU use with channel EQ meters open in hi-res analyzer mode while Logic's CPU meters remain constant at approx 30% cpu use. NOT being an expert in software design this seems like the problem lies as much with the operating system graphics priority causing core-audio input delay rather than Logic's code necessarily being the problem. Also, I didn't say the CPU was being pegged.

Here no prob on Snow Leopard 10.6.8, but with Lion it's not the same deal......Logic is responding very very slow to mouse clicks and key commands with just 4 Channel EQ

This problem exists since Lion came out....and nothing has changed 😟

Thanks for all those great inputs, I hope Apple read us now......and will adress a fix ASAP

I noticed (on the LPH forum as well) you'd been having a bad time with Lion on your machine - so you're saying that 10.6.8 is working good ?

The only conclusion I'm drawing is that the OS is developed in line with the latest hardware that Apple produce - it might even be down to chipsets (as a hardware possibility) or memory handling (as a software one) and probably other possibilities that I don't usually consider, because I'm not exactly that into technological stuff.

My own experience is that Lion and Logic are working great together on the latest Mac Mini Server (i7 processor/4Gb) and I can go ahead and do stuff without thinking about whether I'll be able to or not.

If you find a combination of hardware and OS (well, possibly a few other things as well) that works just think of it as that configuration and find a way of keeping it so you can get it back - computers are meant to be good at that kind of thing.. he he..

Yeah sure i use a dual boot system...you're lucky with your Mac Mini, but i have a Mac Pro 2009 / 16gb / SSD / latest ATI, it should not be a problem for this kind of machine. It's an anormal behavior, some people encounter this issue on iMacs aswell.

But you know, Logic Pro is a kind of pro software, i'm using it with pro hardware (i guess) i should have pro performance 🙂 and not a slow truck. I'm ok with Snow, but soon the support will be stopped, and since Lion is compatible with my system (i bought it) it's "logic" that logic a software developped/distributed by apple themselves should work on this platform. I have to admit that i like some Lion features.

Anyway Logic is the only software acting like this, all other DAW doesn't have any problems AT ALL. Logic on Lion with my system is the worst DAW ever.

This happens not only when using Channel EQ Analyzer !!! For me its happening with every new serious plugin like Waves Kramer Tape, Waves Kramer PIE, Waves Kramer HLS, Plugin Alliance Character, Plugin Alliance Maag EQ4, SPL De-Esser, 112Db Redline Reverb, Slate Digital FG-X and etc. Logic cant handel two - three plugins with serious graphic interface thats it !

If u can downgrade - do it it will resolve the issue! If u cant - wait for update and keep this thread alive )))

I had never noticed the issue, but opening up four or five EQs with the analyzer enabled, I get severe lag on user interaction on 10.7.4. Same machine, on 10.6.8, no problems at all.

Looks like an OS issue since the previous OS was fine, hopefully it will be fixed in the next OS update (or with a Logic update). Drawing a graphical analysis isn't that complex and doesn't use that much CPU, this just looks like something broke compatibility.

I think it is a Logic issue.

I have just, in the last 3 weeks, got a 27" iMac running 10.7.4

This is my first Lion experience.

I was DEFINITELY having the lagging GUI issue in 10.6.8 running 9.1.7 on my old 24" iMac.

I think the problem started somewhere around 9.1.4 (I'm guessing, I have various versions on my old iMac running 10.6.8 but on my new iMac I only have 9.1.7).

The problem comes and goes without any apparent trigger.

At one time I thought it was caused by Plugin Allinace plugins and the online licence centre.

But I get the problem now even when not using any PA plugins.

It is REALLY annoying and spoils what is otherwise a great experience using Logic.

At the moment I'm doing a lot of testing of different Limiters.

I have 6 as inserts on the stereo buss.

Sometimes the simple task of switiching from one to another (hold option and left click) takes what seems like an eternity.

This is in a project which only has 2 stereo tracks, set up like a mastering project.

Hardly any plugins at all other than on the stereo buss where I do have sometimes up to the max 15 inserts, but many are bypassed at any one time.

The problem seems to slowly build the longer I am working in a project.

Closing and rebooting Logic often provides a fix.

And it doesn't happen all the time which is probably why I haven't just given up on Logic and started to look seriously at another DAW.

Apple MUST realise this is a real problem.

It is discussed on EVERY music forum where Logic is discussed, without exception.

weird didnt' had the lagging issue in 10.6.8 all was working fine.

guys have you opened a case to the logic support team ? or you're all using a "free" version ?? they need to know, they need to communicate because it is just not serious, this problem is here since lion showed up.

btw presonus is incredibly fast....apple do something don't let us die in silence.

How does one "open a case?" The best I could find for support options was starting a thread here, which is precisely what I did.

And yes I am a long-time paying customer. I bought Logic Pro 7 and have paid for every Pro/Studio upgrade since then, and prior to that had also bought Logic Hit Kit (a scaled-down version for getting your feet wet). I am sure that most people in this thread have done the same or similar.

Logic 2.5, MIDI Only. Logic Audio version 3.

I won't tell you how much money I've spent on this program over the years.. version 4.xx was extremely buggy and I started using Cubase, I more or less let Logic languish only getting an occasional upgrade, I still use Cubase for commercial work as it has much better audio editing and I can apply effects to any part of a file without resorting to clumsy automation. Currently using 10.6.8 and Logic 9.1.3. Probably the best match of Logic and the OS I've used in sometime, seems crash proof.

Sign up for the Developer's forum, uses the same Apple I.D. used here, you can make much more detailed bug reports... also, the most common way to "open a case" is to call support.

Jun 23, 2012 1:43 AM in response to Pancenter

Fluffy, you work in IT right ? So you already know how does it works when you have a computer/software problem in big companies. Call the hotline or send them a mail, and your case is registered. It's a kind of public forum, i don't think dev read posts there, if they were, this problem should be already FIXED. I don't know how they work for Quality Assurance of their product but seriously i'm tired of all this, are they even beta testers?. I already did a bug report, didn't got any answer, we all should send a bug report and add a link to this discussion, "mass psychology" kind of thing....

Best,

Ludo

It is inconceivable that Logic developers/techs/bug fixers wouldn't read this discussion in the Apple Support Communities.

Surely it is something they woulld check all the time.

They are only human after all.

Like most people with an interest in something like Logic, surely they would check the discussion on the web site of the company which owns, develops and sells Logic.

Or is all this a really wacky concept !??

Logic 9's UI extremely laggy - any fixes?
