Logic 9's UI extremely laggy - any fixes?

I've been a pretty happy Logic user since 2004, but lately version 9 has been really cheezing me off. It seems that whenever I'm playing my current project, the user interface becomes completely unresponsive to key commands and mouse clicks, which will be delayed for many seconds, or ignored entirely.

This is a fresh install of Logic Pro 9.1.4, 32-bit, on one of the new Mac minis (dual 2.7GHz i7, 4GB RAM, stock 500GB hard drive), with a PreSonus FireStudio Project. However, this was also happening on my previous system, a 2008 15" unibody MacBook Pro. It was happening a little bit on Snow Leopard but it's gotten much worse under Lion. My MacBook had aftermarket RAM (8GB) and an aftermarket SSD, but everything in the Mini is stock.

It's happening even if I only have one or two tracks, although it seems to be worse if I have any of the various metering plugins running and open, or ChanEQ with the analyzer turned on. I wonder if maybe those plugins aren't handling UI updates correctly, or something.

Just to be clear, I have absolutely no third-party AudioUnits installed, and it's neither a CPU nor an I/O issue (both gauges are pretty much empty, and Activity Monitor shows Logic as taking about 10% of one CPU), and yet it takes anywhere from 3-10 seconds for a simple mouse click to go through.

This is getting EXTREMELY frustrating, especially since the lag seems to always happen at the worst moments (i.e. I'm trying to turn down the volume on a track which suddenly got really loud, and the lack of responsiveness means my ears get blasted and I have to take a break for them to recover before I can start mixing again).

Has anyone else been experiencing this and found a workaround? Is anyone at Apple even paying attention to these issues? I feel like it's the same problem that was being discussed in this thread, which was never resolved: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2396951

It is inconceivable that Logic developers/techs/bug fixers wouldn't read this discussion in the Apple Support Communities.

Surely it is something they woulld check all the time.

A couple of Logic devs do peruse the board now and then.

Apple tosses out OS updates pretty quick and the Logic dev team is spread pretty thin right now (from what I understand).

I may add, this is inconceivable that such a problem exists since long time in a software developped and distributed by Apple 🙂. This software should be at least performance bugs free, and i'm not speaking about third party plugins, just only the Channel EQ performance hog. So it's really in their expertise skills.

Or if they aware of this, they should communicate to prospects and existing customers......but oww this not serious to tell customers : "sorry Logic isn't very powerful, we know, but we don't care".

Jun 23, 2012 3:13 AM in response to hypnotik

That's over the top, Logic is in fact very powerful, works extremely well on 10,6,8 Logic version 9.1.3. I never update to the latest OS and Logic version just because it's available, it's more important to use what works. Codewise Logic is monstrous and Apple OS hardware changes and OS development wait for no one.

If you want to gripe at someone I personally don't think it should be the Logic dev team, jump on Apple's case.

Incidently, running 4 channel EQ's analyze ON and set to hi-res shows Logic using abnormal CPU in activity monitor, however, Logic itself remains smooth with no hesitation or lagging, turning the analyse function to low-res immediately frees up CPU use.

Jun 23, 2012 3:48 AM in response to Pancenter

In fact Channel EQ is ONE problem, it's not the only plugin affected! many others plugins works with hi-res graphics you can't disable (vengeance, brainworx, waves h-eq, etc...)

Tired to say always the same thing, read the whole topic! Fluffy's explanation is the best over there. I've also uploaded several videos on youtube to show the problem. At least i don't experience any problems with 10.6.8, but i'm not a selfish guy i think about my friends who bought brand new mac mini where Snow Leopard can't be installed due to dumb lock. Also i really like some features of Lion, and i really want to go for it, i think i've wait enough we are in 10.7.4 today and in a few weeks we're going to see the new OS.

Anyway just watch at this EXTREME example of the Logic sluggishness.

Here i'm using two third party plugins in a "big" logic project. Watch how the GUI reacts, it's killing me. Each doucle click sound you hear is ONE physical mouse click. I volontary did'nt speak about third party stuff because they are always people to say "hey it's third party fault! blablabla". Channel EQ does'nt cause the same extreme behavior but we are very close to that.

It illustrates perferctly fluffy's words. Thanks again Fluffy.

Now what?

If I could have purchased my new 27" iMac with SL 10.6.8 I may have. I asked.

But it wasn't an option and my old iMac had simply hit the CPU wall.

Against all my expectations Lion has a few features which I like.

Pancenter if Apple didn't make the OS and the application then I think the cautious approach of not updating - just because you can - would be more compelling.

But here we have a company making an application which only works on their OS.

The lagging GUI issue doesn't happen all the time, as I previously said.

Hard to put an exact figure on it but it is certainly less than 50% of the time, maybe something like 20% of the time.

That is why I still love Logic and WANT to say with it.

Even though Apple has owned Logic for almost 10 years, much of the program was written before Apple purchased it. Programming Logic is (I'm certain) a Herculean task..... it is interdependent with many parts of the operating system. In my opinion, professional software sits outside of the upgrade boundary, if you use the software to make a living or having it work correctly is important to you, shelve the "upgrade" mindset, I don't care who makes the OS or the application, you do what's necessary to have a fully functional system you can rely on 100% of the time.

This is not the same Apple of 10 years ago, they are supporting more hardware combinations than ever before and also have to support their older Intel systems, if you want a working DAW the best policy is wait and see.

Apple computers are PC's now, if Intel doesn't get that new USB chip fully documented or makes in error in the specs Apple users will suffer.

It was easy for Apple to say "It Just Works" when you're only supporting a handful of hardware combinations.

Apple users should get used to the fact of compatibility problems with the pro-software line. I think this is the way it's going to be from now on. What users shouldn't get used to is Apple keeping mum about, users with problems might want to call Apple and let them know. If you let Apple off the hook it will only get worse.

Concerning your new iMac: Don't know if there was any truth to this rumor, I'd heard that some new Mac Pros and iMacs had EFI firmware that wasn't 100% compatible with either the latest OS update, or the latest Logic update. I realize purchasing new hardware doesn't give you the choice of operating system but it was my understanding if you mentioned you were going to be using Logic at purchase time Apple would give you the option to install Snow Leopard.

I'm the last one to defend Apple, It's cr@ppy the way they treat the pro customer base. The launch of Final Cut X was an early Beta release. If you purchased the program not to long after it was released you were a "paying" beta tester.

My feelings are that Lion is a dog, too much going on in the background plus they've managed to find more ways to slow the graphics down (maybe Retina support?)

Good luck, intermittent problems are difficult to diagnose.

Jun 28, 2012 1:27 PM in response to fluffy

I too had the problem with the Channel EQ on hi-res and lots of lag which is why I returned back to 10.6.8 which is now running perfect.

I did read somewhere that Apple will be updating their Pro apps to support the new retina display resolutions and therefore I'm hopeful they'll be updating Logic Pro with 9.1.8 or something like that. Hopefully they've looked into the lag problem by that update.

Thats sad that nowdays apple more worried about kids playing garageband, then professionals who worked on their hardware and software .

Thats insane that they throw another system version before fixing serious bugs in last one. This is first time they do that! Things changing and not in a good way, bb Steve.

I never had to save my documents and projects before work is done in Tiger or Leopard and Logic 8, now its like back to windows again, cuz apps are lagging, freezing and crashing all the time without a reason.

😮

BTW - this is completely killing it in Lion, and gives u noticeble lags in Snow Leo (See the screenshot). There is like no CPU usage at all, and im on my 6750m 1GB !

Please to all guys,

Send your bug report to Apple now, really if people thinks Logic team keeps reading forums when they're at work we can't go forward ! Do not kept silent (like Apple) and make your voice heard!!

Please, save Logic, do a feedback about this issue which is a 1 year old with a high workflow impact.
