My macbook air keeps freezing

Everytime I am using my air, it will freeze on me. No matter wether im watching a video or using the internet or microsoft office. It will freeze. It comes up with the "bech ball" loading symbol and then freeze completly. Sometimes it will freeze during startup.

I am aware it is a situation airs, and it maybe a fan issue. How can I find out what the issue is and how can I fix it. Please.

Really you need to post some more information. Which Air, how much ram and available drive space. What does activity monitor show going on? Have you tried a reboot, etc, etc etc.

Freezing on mine seemed to be getting worse so I took it into the local Genius Bar. Lo and behold it froze when the tech opened the lid and starting moving on trackpad. Since I had bought at same store 2 days prior, he quickly processed a return/replacement and I got a new machine that has not had any problems. Tech said this was the first he'd seen (second he'd heard of) with this problem - likely bad logic board connection for keyboard/trackpad.

Worse part is this new MBA has Toshiba SSD, first one had the Samsung 😟

So, FWIW, if you're having random unexplained freezing, could be hardware issue on logic board, and no amount of OS tweaks are going to fix that.

It seems that SMC and PRAM reset did it for me. No freeze since 17.8

But I also disabled automatic TimeMachine backup. I do the backup manually every 2 or 3 days.

There is another thread, where a white MacBook owner has the same issue. So I think, it is Lion related?

Does anybody have the same issue with a different Mac than a MacBook Air?

I also have freezes like once a day. It happened yesterday evening at 6:24 and today at 7:24. Funny, but I have really no idea what causes this. I already have reinstalled Lion twice as I thought a bad migration did this. Still no success. I already did reset SMC and PRAM, still did not help. I really think of calling apple on Monday and bring it to an Apple Service Provider, but as it only happens like once a day it will be hard to find for them. I have read of cases where they just gave those macbooks back with a note that no error has been found... Still hoping for a Solution as my Macbook is perfect besides this error.

I've been having the same issue... but if you want to know what the cause is when it happens run "console" to see the error messages prior to the issue happening.

Applications -> Utilities -> Console

My issue turned out to be "disk0s2: I/O Error"

Macbook air was freezing at random times (5-15+mins), repeatedly . Only problem is after I rebooted (held down the power button for about 10secs) The error messages were not logged (probably because it is a disk issue).

Ran SMC, PRAM reset, disk utility and repair (hard drive came up clean); but still had issues afterwards.

Any who, I finally gave up and went to the genius bar. I have to wait for the SSD hard drive to come in, drop it off, then wait 3-5 days for it to be fixed. It was that or leave the laptop there and wait for about 1 week.

My airbook is < 3 months old... This isn't really what I expected buying an apple product, but I guess this happens with SSD hard drives? Only wish they would swap out the laptops like they do with iphones.

Anyone else with this issue?

Well as you have mentioned, I have not Seen an error in the console :/ I now have in mind that it has something to do with my left usb port. I dont have random Freeses every 5-15 minutes, its more like once a day. I have given it to an apple service provider which Takes care of it now. Im just hoping that they can find the error and exchange my logicboard or ssd or what ever

I have an 11inch 128gb Core i5 and a 13inch 256gb Core i7 and both freeze ALL the time. It's quite frustrating to experience complete system locks everyday. I've also tried the various SMC resets, etc. That is a temporary fix and then the freezes start back up again.

I use these for work and I've had them lock up in presentations and other times I've been depending on them. Meanwhile my el-cheapo Win7 machine will run for weeks without freezing. Ditto my last-generation Macbook Air.

Beyond that, Lion seems to really slow this thing down. I know the benchmarks are better on this generation Air, but it just feels slower than the last one.

Next stop, eBay.

Hello to all,

I have been getting constant freezes since I purchased my 2011 MBA this summer. I had been thinking that it was one of the programs in my Apps stack that I run but could not isolate it and after coming here I realized it might be my HW.

I had the tech team at the Genius bar in our local Apple store look at my MBA and within 5 minutes of running diagnostics they determined it was fautly RAM on the SSD and also a main logic board issue. After replacing these parts I have had zero issues.

I have an old Macbook Air 1.6ghz core 2 duo with 2gig of Ram. No SSD HD, and it freezes every 5 mins. No matter what I do, movies, web browsing...

I could tell using Chrome makes it worse, I'm back on FFox and the freezes wih beachball decreased a bit.

Because I don't have an SSD I assume it's something else.

I upgraded to Lion, but the problem remains.

I have no more warranty but I will take it to the genius bar. I hope it won't cost me an eye.
