Its pretty simple... not sure why its causing such a problem... while the macbook is on... plug the iphone in... then close the lid... the power will continue to charge the iphone5. Unplug the phone... then the power stops... try to reconnect it while its still in standby... no power....
The key here is starting the charging process while the computer is on.
I found this discussion by asking the same question.
answer #1 from Diggthat (above)

answer #2
this will only work if you have >50% battery life
Hope this helps all the travelers out there who don't want to carry around a power pack
Cheers !

Yes, I found out today that Apple has the iPhone set up to require the laptop NOT be asleep, etc, in order to charge. The laptop can charge any of 100 other phones just fine while asleep, but not iPhones.
Mate I know what you mean and have found your post only because I googled asking the same question. I fly a lot and so play about with my iPhone 5S draining the battery. I then used to switch my MacBook Pro on and charge my phone off it. Often I would shut the lid and put it back in my bag with the charger sticking out. However since updating to Mavericks I have noticed that as soon as my Mac goes to sleep my phone stops charging. Not sure how all the other members failed to understand what you were talking about.
as usual on apple forums, a bunch of "...you're doing it wrong..." type comments or some other useless info.
What is wrong with wanting the ports to be powered when plugged in and unit asleep? If you cannot or do not know how to answer the guy's question, refrain from the BS.
I enjoy my Mac products, but truly dislike the support groups due to lack of "snide-free" knowledgeable help.
Well i started to have the same problem recently
It started when i installed mavericks
I have a question open with this post:
it should explain it
Hey guys!
I recently updated my macbook pro mid 2011 to the new operating system: MAVERICKS
I used to do this little handy thing, where i used my mac as a powerbank for my phone once it was empty. I would insert a micro usb cable in one of the usb ports, and it would be active and thus charge my phone....
Now it seems like in mavericks the usb-ports aren't powered during sleepmode anymore... how do i change this back?
Whe
I am thinking of things like:
found here... http://www.daydeal.com/home.php?cat=4976
Not endorsing this website of its' products.
More stuff here from Apple and "approved" suppliers:

Also... there is information out there regarding hiberate modes and how to change them 😉
The iphone book doesn't show me how to keep the USB ports active on my Mac Book when it is put in sleep mode.... I don't follow your logic here. (Yes, the phone already charges while connected to my Mac Book buyt not when the Mac Books goes into sleep mode or turned off).
You have your answer, then. The iPhone will not charge with the computer is asleep (I assume that you know it isn't charging?) There is nothing you can do. You cannot force the ports to supply power when asleep. Some iDevices can charge when the computer is asleep. Perhaps the power needed for the iPhone requires the computer be awake. Or, you can use a separate wall outlet charger.
OK, for some of you that may have the same problem or question as me. I have been testing my MAC Book Pro for ways to continue to power the usb while laptop in standby or off. I have found the following thing to work or not work.
1. The laptop doesn't send any power to your USB's when it is powered off reguardless if it is plugged in or not.
2. If laptop is put in standby no power is sent to USB's unless the power cord is plugged in on the laptop. So once again if you plug your laptop in and then put it in standby it does still send power to the USB's when requested.
So the bottom line is, On my last laptop (toshiba) I was given an option to go into system preference and make a change that allowed my laptop to continue to send power to USB's when requested while in standby or powered off. I was hoping I could do the same thing with my new smokin Mac Book Pro but I haven't found that kind of option in the MAC.
You can plug the notebook into the power adapter. It seems silly to charge the iPhone (in my opinion) from a notebook running off it's own battery. If you do not have power available thenit seems this is you only option to kee the iphone alive. You could also consider one of those portable batteries made just to charge mobile devices.
When I travel, i don't have a 120/240v power point to charge laptop etc. And the laptop has a huge battery, fully capable of charging 100 other phones, but not iPhone for some wisdom of Apple.
I think perhaps getting an external USB battery, charging it, then using it to charge my iPhone might be an answer, BUT ONLY IF the iPhone will charge from an external battery. Who knows?
Not sure which iphone you have but with my MBP(2012) if I plug in my iphone 5 before entering sleep mode, my phone still charges. I don't think that the MBP will charge anything while powered completly off.
My problem was with a Lenovo laptop, which will not charge my iPhone 5 when you close the lid or put the laptop into sleep mode. The USB ports *will* run many devices while asleep, with no problem. ONLY the iPhone stops charging when the laptop is put to sleep.
@williamluther, @Yanosch,
Thanks, williamluther, for the RIGHT, "snide-free" answer.
I have a brand-new 2015 MBP with Yosemite. If I turn on my laptop, then plug in my iPhone4, it begins to recharge the phone. Then, if I close the lid, the phone continues to charge as long as it remains plugged in. If I unplug the phone, then re-connect it while the laptop is still asleep (lid closed), then the phone will NOT get power. As soon as I open the lid (wake up), then the phone begins to charge again. Close the lid and phone continues to charge.
There may be more tricks to this such as minimum laptop battery level, or connecting/disconnecting the power supply, etc., but I haven't tried those. Any intelligent person should be able to pick up on the nuances given enough time for experimentation.
