Its pretty simple... not sure why its causing such a problem... while the macbook is on... plug the iphone in... then close the lid... the power will continue to charge the iphone5. Unplug the phone... then the power stops... try to reconnect it while its still in standby... no power....

The key here is starting the charging process while the computer is on.

Well i started to have the same problem recently

It started when i installed mavericks

I have a question open with this post:

it should explain it

Hey guys!

I recently updated my macbook pro mid 2011 to the new operating system: MAVERICKS

I used to do this little handy thing, where i used my mac as a powerbank for my phone once it was empty. I would insert a micro usb cable in one of the usb ports, and it would be active and thus charge my phone....

Now it seems like in mavericks the usb-ports aren't powered during sleepmode anymore... how do i change this back?

Whe

Mate I know what you mean and have found your post only because I googled asking the same question. I fly a lot and so play about with my iPhone 5S draining the battery. I then used to switch my MacBook Pro on and charge my phone off it. Often I would shut the lid and put it back in my bag with the charger sticking out. However since updating to Mavericks I have noticed that as soon as my Mac goes to sleep my phone stops charging. Not sure how all the other members failed to understand what you were talking about.

as usual on apple forums, a bunch of "...you're doing it wrong..." type comments or some other useless info.

What is wrong with wanting the ports to be powered when plugged in and unit asleep? If you cannot or do not know how to answer the guy's question, refrain from the BS.

I enjoy my Mac products, but truly dislike the support groups due to lack of "snide-free" knowledgeable help.

I found this discussion by asking the same question.

answer #1 from Diggthat (above)

while the macbook is on... plug the iphone in... then close the lid... the power will continue to charge the iphone5. Unplug the phone... then the power stops... try to reconnect it while its still in standby... no power....

answer #2

this will only work if you have >50% battery life

Hope this helps all the travelers out there who don't want to carry around a power pack

Cheers !

@williamluther, @Yanosch,

Thanks, williamluther, for the RIGHT, "snide-free" answer.

I have a brand-new 2015 MBP with Yosemite. If I turn on my laptop, then plug in my iPhone4, it begins to recharge the phone. Then, if I close the lid, the phone continues to charge as long as it remains plugged in. If I unplug the phone, then re-connect it while the laptop is still asleep (lid closed), then the phone will NOT get power. As soon as I open the lid (wake up), then the phone begins to charge again. Close the lid and phone continues to charge.

There may be more tricks to this such as minimum laptop battery level, or connecting/disconnecting the power supply, etc., but I haven't tried those. Any intelligent person should be able to pick up on the nuances given enough time for experimentation.

I realize this post has been marked "solved," but this question didn't really help me. I have a solution that doesn't appear to have been addressed, so let's get right to it.

A. Open Energy Saver Settings

1. Go to you Apple Icon (top left of any screen), click that icon, and select "System Preferences."

2. In System Preferences, select "Energy Saver"

3. Go ahead and set the sliding scales as such:

Computer Sleep: Never

Display Sleep (Whatever you want, this does not affect the result)

NOTE: You have two sets of sliding scales in the "Energy Saver" menu, one for Battery, and one for Power Adapter. Be mindful that, depending on which of these modes you wish use when charging your devices, the sliding scales and other settings must be set respectively. That is to say that if you intend to charge your mac whilst it is (or is not) connected to a power adapter, the settings under each of those tabs, respectively, must be correctly set.

4. Most importantly, UNCHECK the box underneath the sliding scales labeled "Put Hard Disks To Sleep When Possible." The USB ports WILL NOT be powered when the Disks are asleep. The Disks must be awake in order to send power to the USB ports.

B. Charge That Device!

Plug your device in PRIOR to putting your mac to sleep, and then test the continuity of USB charging by putting your Mac to sleep and watching it charge your USB device. Mind friggin blown.
