Finder Windows lose view settings

Not sure if this is an issue with my system or Lion in general, however my Finder windows don't remember their view settings. This is true even if I have the "Always open" and "browse" boxes checked. The bug seems at least partcially related to the "All My Files" feature in that if I open an "All my files" window, all future Finder windows will open with the same window dimensions and view settings regardless of thier original window settings.

However even if I avoid this feature altogether, the view settings still get mangled. Folders set to snap to grid are jumbled. Folders with cusotm icon sizes default back down to normal size and now and again the overall view will change randomly.

Anyone else having this issue? It's driving me nuts since I have my job folders laid out in a very specific way (list items for files, icons for images, etc.).

YES, I thought I was alone because no one else has been talking about this. I work with many custom setups for windows and some times they will make it all day and other time they get all jumbled every hour or so.

Yeah 10.7.1 does nothing to fix this issue. The only work arounds are never closing your windows or getting used to the chaos. My job folders are an absolute mess now. Not only did they lose their very strict organizational structure, they don't even have a consistant view now. Various job folders open up in various different views.

And my stock photography folder might be the worst of them all. It was once set to large icons w/ previews arranged by date with a black window background but now defaults to 32x32 icons all randomly stacked upon one another in a standard Finder window with a sidebar. In short, I have to arrange the window each time before using it. It's a huge waste of time.

… not to mention that even the desktop gets screwed up every now and then! I have a 27" with additional external display, on this big desktop are about always 50 to 70 folders and files, sorted and arranged like I need them to be. Can you imagine what it's like when suddenly everything is just a messed up and unsorted pile on the right side of one screen? Just like the finder thought "let's have some fun!"? Grrr!

Oh, and the lost settings even appear and disappear in every window when you want to safe or open files.

GRRR!

(and I won't even start to grumble over that new slo-mo text edit!)

I sincerely hope it gets addressed soon, though letting such an obvious bug slip through multiple rounds of testing in the first place certainly doesn't inspire much confidence. It seems, the more iOS grows in popularity, the more OS X gets neglected.

That said, the moment they do fix it, I'll likely be buying a new Macbook Air and a Mini. I would have purchased them already but, as silly as it may sound, this bug is a dealbreaker for me. I use my Macs for work and this negatively impacts my workflow.

Regarding spacespencer's comment about Desktop icons arrangement. --It is indeed an Apple bug, but there's a 3rd-Party app to fix this .... unfortunately for the desktop only. It's a little app called "
"Desktility". Save your desired desktop icon arrangement in Desktility, and when they jumble go to the app and simply press the Restore Positions button. How I wish this could do the same for any and all Finder windows. BTW, I, too, have filed a bug report with Apple.

I am like you in that I like a specific way the files and folders are organized, I prefer folders first in alphabetical order and then files in alphabetical order. I was semi there with Snow Lepoard, at least order was not changed. Now, the last file or folder is always displayed first regardless of alpabetical order. Since I woork on multiple procjects this is annoyinmg. I addition, when I am "saving as" the order of folders and files is different and not in alphabetical order. So you have to hunt. I am afraid that this is a programming that Apple has to fix.

It appears Apple is moving toward a file-less management system. Apps will be managing files in their future.

I do not agree with this. But this is probably why they dont' care about the Finder details.

Look..like millions of other "computer users, designers and programmers" ...I only want certain files...named in a certain way....in certain places on a desktop or in folders. I don't like apps to make copies of music or photos and reference to other hidden places on the drive...using up twice the space.

I like my drives loaded on my desktop. I love to to name those drives and back up certain folders on certain drives! (don't get me started on Time Machine) If I need to backup a folder -it's called "Click, Drag and Replace!"

I "get it" with iOS devices..and I understand iCloud with instant sync. It's can be very handy and cool.....however..even while live sync to everything seems great..when something like your calendars and contacts get screwed..ALL your devices are screwed instantaneously. There is no backup in the cloud.

MobileMe was brilliant because you could "UP" sync when YOU WANTED and know that if something went wrong..you could count on another device to have a good copy. AND really...c'mon I don't need instant syncing....I can do that once a day....or even once a week is fine. But depending on cloud to keep an archive or thinking it's going to save you from data damage.... is like believing that the republican party is going to help the poor or working class...ever!

The problem with storage spaces like GoogleDrive is that it uses it's own folder..and you have to drag COPIES of your music, photos and files into their folder to sync up. DOUBLING YOUR DISK SPACE.

So far my assessment of using iCloud and/or syncing docs live just doesn't work if you depend on using that space as a backup.

It's never a backup.

Well..ok that was my rant on Finder changes!

..and remember folks...everything is interconnected and one change always affects another.
