Hi,

Just bought a new Macbook Pro 15.4, 2 Ghz i7 processor, AMD Raedon HD 6490M 256 Mb Video, 4 Gb Memory...

After Three days, whenever I try to play a video, in quicktime or vlc or just load a video song on virtual dj,

the screen just freezes and splits into two. The Force quit doesnt work.

The only thing that works is "Hold the power button for three seconds."

Please help..

Thank you

I have the same issue. This began before I installed Lion OSx. Happens randomly and not connected to any particular application. Here are some screen shots. It happens at least two times a day and is getting very frustrating. Taking it to the genius bar this weekend.

All I can say is that it began after i applied some major updates (most probably the ones to fix the freeze issues that were cropping up on these new macbooks when they were launched). This is only my observation.

MacBook Pro 2011 March (Thunderbolt) i7 - 2.2 GHz.

Update:

Took my MacBook Pro to the Apple Store. Fortunately, the issue occured twice in the store. They ran some diagnostic and i guess it showed that the Logic Board was busted. They replaced the Logic Board (motherboard). Actual cost - $526.00 but my Pro is under the 1st year warranty so free for me. Makes me want to buy the extended warranty. Have never bought extended warranty on anything in my life so far.....I guess there's a first for everything.

When they saw the issue it was like they had seen it before.

Will update this post after a few days of using and testing it if this resolved the issue.

Yes it did! No problem since it was replaced. At the time I took it for service, they were not surprised at all. By their reaction it seemed like it had occured before. They will be able to diagnose if it was a motherboard failure and if I am not mistaken even we can do it... if I faintly remember. Just google and see what you find for running diagnostics on macbook pro.

Hope this helps.
