DON'T UPDATE TO LION!

I would call tech support or something. It sounds like you may have had a bad install. I installed Lion and it works great for me.

I would urge you to consider that possibility of error when downloading over the Internet and not blame the software immediately. Lion does need a little work here and there to polish is usability but it doesn't destroy your system.

Update to Lion, ASAP!

Do a google search for update Java for Lion; and see if that helps

You didn't do your homework! There are several third party applications that do not get automatically installed or updated when moving to Lion. Here are the main ones:

Adobe Flash

Java

Perian

Flip4Mac

There are also updates for Lion with many other apps such as

Definitely upgrade to Lion! Some really excellent features here.

And I believe special appreciation is due to a user like putnik for doing a great job of listing recommended installations after a Lion install.

I agree, do not update to Lion, it has been nothing but problems since I got it.

• WiFi connection constantly disconnects (never had this problem before upgrade)
• VPN connection constantly disconnects if you do manage to keep the WiFi functional (again never had this problem w/ Cisco VPN before upgrading to the "built-in" Cisco VPN support on Lion)
• When trying to open a file, it opens the previous 5-10 files I've used in that application (especially Preview and Excel)
• Everything moves much slllooooowwwwwwer, I get the pinwheel of death constantly across many applications
• I can't put my user account in the favorites section of the Finder anymore, what?
• Finder switches away from list view if you pop too many levels up and goes into annoying 'cover flow' view
• And yes, Java not being installed may be part of "doing your homework" but it should be part of the OS in the easy-to-use experience Apple tries to suggest that it has

It is true, I can now see Safari in "full screen" mode, meaning I see an extra ~1 inch of screen, but pretty much everything else is worse with this "upgrade". Save your money.

I strongly wish I could revert to Snow Leopard.

Installing an OS is a very complicated process. There

can be any number of things that can cause things to

go awry. Before proclaiming something is trash, you

should make sure that you have done everything to determine

it is trash.

I have installed Lion on my 3 Macs (is there a TV show there)

and have total success on 2 of them. On one I have had some

serious video issues but have found some resolution to the

issue. Not by ranting and raving, but by discussion with fellow

users and some basic troubleshooting which one can easily find

if one looks.

Does Lion have it's share of problems? Yes.

Would I shout to the world not to upgrade? No!

I would suggest taking precautions though should things

not work out.

I bought an operational car twenty years ago. Can't be bothered to have it serviced or change the oil, stuff like that. I just expect it to work.

It doesn't run any more, so I've just sent a complaint to the manufacturer, and told them I will never buy any more of the junk they inflict on us drivers.

I've installed Lion on a brand new 21.5" iMac, clean SL install upgraded Lion on top. System constantly locks up several times a day when playing video (never happened once in 4 weeks of using SL).

Should I have had it "serviced" before upgrading to Lion to avoid this problem?

I wont argue with you about how much one should prepare for a major operating system upgrade. If you have never used a computer before, I forgive you, but a "common user" would know the score.

Lion is a ***** cat - I installed it on my 5 Macs without a hitch. The were a few updates to do, like Java for one, and a couple of hardware updates. This is normal stuff to be done anytime you do an upgrade such as this.

I have had no issues that weren't fixable in minutes, adn only a few of them. Most of what people are complaining about is features, and changes in how things are done.

Some folks need to reset their SMC and NVRAM, due to hardware issues, as well as software.

If people have checked for hardware, and software, incompatibilities, and removed any incomnpatibilities, as well as repaired permissions, dumped caches, etc, there should be no problem with updating.

At one of the businesses, with 50 Macs, we had no real issues either, excpet to explain to folks the changes, and thhe new features. The only thing we had wrong there was one of the MFPs needed to be deleted and reloaded - after that, no problems so far.

There are a few things that are a little rough around the edges, but nothing to get excited about. Some things will be added, changed, and smoothed out, over the next few upgrades.

Many of your issues are ones that I have never heard of and certainly am not experiencing them myself. No troubles with Wifi here although that one is widespread, and I would imagine that your VPN woes are stemming from your wifi issues. As for some program opening your files again when you want a different one, have those files been closed before you quit the application? You are aware of Lion's Resume functionality. It would makes sense that if you quit an application without closing its windows, they will reopen on launch.

If you're saying that you cant put your home folder in the sidebar of Finder, a quick trip to the View preferences in Finder will clear that up for you. Either that or just drag it to the sidebar like any other folder.

Your other Finder issue sounds unique, but it's possible that a trip to your preferences will help there as well. Finder can set viewing preferences for specific folders such that they open with a certain view method every time. It's possible that the default is Coverflow and your normal windows are using a per folder setting.

If you aren't aware, you're more than welcome to "downgrade" to Snow Leopard again. To be fair it involves formatting your drive in order to reinstall 10.6, but as long as you have a backup or some other form of recovering your data it would be fine.
