DON'T UPDATE TO LION!

I couldn't be more unsatisfied with OS X Lion. First, problems with Safari (and sometimes I got to restart because it has some problem with Youtube), problems with Finder, my network it's completely deconfigured in comparation with my old Snow Leopard, and now the sound has gone with NO reasons. I hear the sound of the volume going up and down, but can't play Youtube and even iTunes! With all the respect, I thought Apple was different from Microsoft, but now that become this big, feels like thinks the same way.

DO NOT UPDATE TO LION! Don't waste your money with a software that have a lot of issues to get fixed.

Yeah you must be doing something wrong because it couldn't possibly be Apple's fault !

There's a serious amount of fanboy-ism here and on the forums in general, I'm only just beginning to realise how bad it is. Fanboys presume the OP is guilty (the problem) rather than innocent (has found a problem worth investigating). There so much bias that it can't be Apple's fault, it must be the user. Then the OP is usually dismissed with some "humourous" quip ... I use the word humourous generously.

And there's too much equivocation with other popular OSes. Apple is supposed to be head and shoulders above the competition, that's why people spend so much more money on Macs !

If you really like Apple products, like I do, then do the company a favour and question and critique what they do. Undying, unquestioning loyalty will not do the company any favours.

I made PCs with parts since I was 9 yrs old, and if I got a Mac it's because I was looking for something differenciated. Not only look good, but work well, like Snow Leopard perfectly did. Anyway, it's the 5th time I post here because of my OS X problems, you gave me all the instructions, and I apreciate that, thank you very much. But where was Apple when those problems become to show? NO UPDATES.

First the MacDefense virus, with THREE months of NO answers of Apple, and NO upgrade. Now an OS X that doesn't work well. Looks like they release updates just thinking to erase Jailbreaks, not solve their problems. When a JB comes, in one week they release a new version.

Also, certanly I'll not upgrade my iPad to OS 5 sooner when they release. Maybe more two months before they solve all their bugs.

The the other million or so people who cannot sustain a WiFi connection with Lion must be completely incompetent and just installed it wrong.

Good grief.

OK. A million people cannot sustain a wifi connection.

Please name the first 50 that come to mind. You must know the names of at least those 0.005% of the poor souls?

My upgrade didn't got well, either.

First attempt ran for more than 70 mintues.

It hung in a blue screen for hours.

I had to hard boot and then it went into the Mac OS Utility.

So, I just reinstalled it. Second pass took 10 minutes.

It hung again.

Finally, I got it to boot up and it was way SLOW.

I chalked that off to Time Machine backing up zillions of new files and libraries. OK.

Rebooted just for GP.

Then I found out all three of my browsers were messed up.

1) about half of my cache was missing. Web sites took forever to update.

2) Several popular web sites don't load correctly, even in Safari (Yahoo mail and oolder web sites using frames).

3) Grap worked for a couple of times (grabing up examples of that mess) and now Grab won't run, either.

4) My new mouse went crazy. It scroll backwards from what I'm used to. No way to change ti back ! Geeez!

I've been running Mac OS since 1984. This was the worst upgrade I'v ever experienced. I don't knwo where to start, but yes, I did call support and I'll talk to them tomorrow, when I have time to be told to REINSTALL and/or reboot. I need a drink. I'm REALLY disappointed. I want to go back to Snow Leopard.

Bummmed out !!

Do you not realise that you are in a forum the function of which is to help people with problems??? Of course every post relates to somebody having a problem with Lion.

Take yourself down to your local hospital and look around. You'd think that at least one or two of the patients would luck into good health, would you?

I'm 65. I was new to Macs in March 1984. You obviously have a way to go.

Greetings,

In the first place there are not millions of you having this trouble, just a few, and there is a wide variance in your complaints. Most of the time the problem will be with a configuration issue, either at your router, or the local machine, or device. The machine is usually the least likely, so that leaves your router, cable modem/router, or DSL to look at. Some hardware that worked fine with Leopard may not work well with Lion - you may need driver/firmware updates, especially if it's more than a couple of years old.

If you're having trouble at work, see your Network Admin folks, or Network Engineer/Manager. The later is my station in life, at the moment.

We use as near the top of the line equipment on our networks, using a Cisco Router, and Extreme Networks Switches for the hard wired, CAT 5/6 systems, and Aruba for the WiFi. At home I personally use Apple Extreme Base Stations, two of them, so I can reach all around my property. I never have had a dropping WiFi connection issue, or with connectivity, with any of the versions of OS X. I have had a minor glitch here and there, but it was a very simple adjustment in each case.

I'm also not saying that people aren't having troubles, here and there, but don't blame OS X Lion, if it had a problem there would be some real issues, and screaming world wide, and a **** of a lot more people complaining than there is now. Apple uses the current IEEE networking standards, and some equipment out there, may not be up to par with this OS, as it has th every latest in standards. It's usually a firmware thing on the little home routers, as I mentioned before, or a way out of whack configuration setting, someplace.

As far as a Fan Boy, I hardly fit that clasification - I'm just an old network engineer that's been around in this business since the 60s when things were really weird. I work with all platforms, not just Apple. If I have an issue with Apple, or Mickey Soft, or any other tech company, I'm on the phone to their support, and pronto, and I do have to call them from time to time.

We, the world, goes though these issues every time there is a new OS, every time, and most of the time it's something simple that the average user should know how to correct or configure. There is the Apple Genius bar, and I know they don't always get it right, but you can ask for escallation, talk to a manager, etc. Apple has, in the past, put out updates to make things more fool proof, more universal, etc, after they receive a number of complaints, and if there is a common denominator that shows up.

As far as doing Apple a favor, I do, I've been a developer, am currently an Apple Systems Engineer, and carry several certs fro them as well as for Microsoft, Oracle, IBM, UNIX, etc. Believe me if they need to be criticized, critiqued, get a butt chewing, I'll be there to do so, if need be. Do I like Apple? Yes, I do, I like the way they do business, most of their innovations, and the quality of the products. I've owned Apple products since the late 70s - and, Yes, I'm a happy camper.

Cheers,

M.

That's what I would have thought also regarding my Finder issue. However, no amount of dragging and dropping of this folder into the Favorites, or selecting it in the Finder-Preferences-Sidebar do anything. In fact, when I try to select this folder in Finder-Preferences-Sidebar it shows the checkmark only when the track-pad is depressed and then automatically unchecks it afterwards. Very annoying, haven't heard anyone else having this issue either, so not much help so far.

To Putnik:

What HOMEWORK ???

I never saw anything but a 50 page EULA agreement I couldn't even read or understand.

I didn't see any release notes, warnings, or instructions.

LION was a totally leap of faith.

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of features I like about lion, but nobody told me about the Recovery partition.

I only ended up there when my system crashed after the first upgrade failed.

I also took the usual precautions of going back to a USB K/B and mouse, unplugging my iSight and iPad, and starting from a quiet system.

Meanwhile, my Console log is running so fast I can't zero in on any one error or problem.

And, thanks for the link to a 3rd party web site for hits about what's not compatible any longer.

Had I known Firefox would be so messed up, I never would waited a lot longer to do this upgrade!
