i have macbook pro 17 inch 10.5.4, that won't boot it starts off with flashing question marks , i inserted the installation disc , did the disk utility thing ,it failed to repair ,
could i use disk warrior(is it free?) to repair it ? if not is there anyway i can save my files and then format my mac ?

might i add that i ran the hardware test , and my hardware turned out to be fine .
Firewire ports would be like one of the 3 on the right here...

You should be able to pull the drive & at least read it on another Mac that can adapt to a 2.5" drive, or one of these...
so overall ,which would you say is the easiest option to start with, disk warrior? firewire ? or pulling the drive and inserting it in another mac??
what about safe mode ? can that help in anyway?

Well, I think every Mac owner should have Disk Warrior on hand to try 1st thing.
See if Safe Mode works, hold SHIFT key down at bootup.
i ordered disk warrior ,i'll give it a try
tried safe mode ,held shift key down , didn't seem to work as question mark folder kept on flashing until the mac shut off by itself

Yes, try having an external drive connected, then boot up holding either the c key or the Option/alt key to boot from the DW Disc.

I've broken-in to just such a beast by using the Installer disc and setting the machine to open via Network System, but it took about 6 false-starts. Maybe even a command-option K, (which used to be Macs way of saying alt-drive.)
I'm no believer in this shift-key since they retired actual Extensions. You'll need to use command-option P &R, to delete the Perimiter Ram, which houses some recent user settings like screen-res, etc. THEN use the C-key which means CD/DVD -drive, to access the (now out of date) Installer Disc.

If you can't have it looked at, I guess we should first try to pull the Haed Drive & see if DW boots then, also not quite sure which MBP 17" you have, but...
