iPhone 4 stuck in headphone mode?

Hey, I've been reading up on this problem, but haven't really seen a fix yet...

My iPhone 4 is stuck in headphone mode (says "Headphone (Ringer)" when adjusting the volume, can't hear through the regular earpiece on phone calls, etc.) I have literally tried everything that I've seen, blowing in the jack, compressed air, sucking through it, and all that. That bad thing is, I just took my old iPhone 4 last Friday (July 22nd) for the exact same problem. They were nice enough to trade out the phone, as I was just out of warranty, but it's the exact same problem.

Come on....really? Is there anything else that can be done?

It is recommended that you plug IN and unplug the headphones 20-30 times in that scenario to hope for a good result. If that doesnt work, check to see if there is anything actually stuck in the port.

Try a hard reset.

if that does not work and you are out of warranty- you can call applecare and set up phone support agreement ($29) that will allow them to troubleshoot the issue. If it is determined to be a hardware issue let them know this happened with your last phone as well. I cannot guarantee this wil get you any results your hoping for- you may just end up having to pay the out of warranty cost again for the phone.

So I know that this is incredibly frustrating. It happens more than you might think because debris gets into the headset jack all the time when a phone is rolling around in a purse, pocket, or cupholder in the car. It's not a glitch - it's just what happens when there's something, even something difficult to see or get to, is stuck in the headset jack. It's literally the only time the ringer (headphones) message appears. The only way to get rid of it is to plug and unplug headphones several times. Otherwise, it has to be fixed by someone who has the equipment to fix it. The only troubleshooting AppleCare can do over the phone (since this is a hardware issue, and not a software issue which is what AppleCare fixes) is in this article

THIS!! THANK YOU!!

My son's iPhone 4S was stuck in the Headphone mode for a half a day... We tried everything. Updating OS, hard reset, pluging and unpluging headphones, sucking the air out, blowing the air out. Nothing worked.

Then I saw this post and tried the WARM air with my blow dryer. The AirPlay symbol turned orange and after about 10 seconds it went back to light gray (normal color). After that, I was able to select iPhone mode.

Thank you so much:)

This just happened to me. Took a hair dryer and blew warm air into headphone jack. Within a minute or so, the problem was fixed.

Mine went into headphone mode I suspect after mixing with snow in my pocket! After a couple of restarts, 5 minutes on the radiator, walking down the road in the middle of the night to borrow a hairdryer, hairdrying the speaker end for 2 minutes, then the headphone socket end for another 2 minutes, all to no avail, sucking through the headphone socket worked fairly instantly. Had to get a good seal round the hole before it did. Marvellous. Heartening to know that such a sophisticated bit of kit can be fixed with nothing more than a mouth and a pair of lungs. Many thanks.
