iPhone 4 stuck in headphone mode?

This happened to me too with my 4S. I've tried everything - hair dryer, sucking, blowing compressed air, headphones in and out many times, restore. Nothing worked. Genius Bar said headphone jack is shot, which is crazy because I almost never use the headphones. $200 to replace with a refurbished model. It's incredible that Apple won't repair that and insist on a a replacement phone. What a complete rip-off. I've been an Apple user for years but I'm getting very frustrated with the deteriorating quality of their products. Nothing ever "just works" anymore.

I can't believe it! Apparently, in a cab ride home I spilled coffee on my iPhone. Found this forum and guess what? Sucking on the headphone jack did the trick.

I didn't think it would work. Tried a couple of times, half heatedly I might add, but so many people said it worked. Forming a tight seal and sucking hard like I was trying to extract water worked after a couple of attempts. Now, my iPhone and I have become more intimate than I ever expected, but I am a happy camper, especially since I was out of town for the weekend and was starting to panic.

worked for me tooo... suckinng via headphone jack... but i want to know will the problem keep on repeating itself..

I don't know if it was the sucking (I can't believe I'm writing this) or the hair dryer, but it's fixed! Thanks. I thought I was going to have to replace the phone.

I had a piece of lint stuck and a toothpick did the trick

This happened to my iphone today after I got caught in the rain with it being in my top pocket. I tried all of the above (plus other ideas in various threads) but to no avail.

Did the unplugging, hair dryer, blowing in, sucking out, cotton bud tip, oven on a very low heat, on top of the plasma tv, calling from other phone and hitting speaker button etc but none of them worked.

Whether the above contributed to fixing it, I don't know but here's what I did and it finally started working:

Played some music with earphones in so I could hear the music. Unplugged the earphones whilst pressing the volume button (+ or - not sure if that mattered). I repeated this twice quickly and "Ringer" volume came up instead of the "Ringer (headphones)" so now I had music playing from the phone speakers. Everythings works now.

Hope this helps what seems to be a common moisture problem with iphones.

Here's what I did - because the sucking in air thingy didn't work - figured it needed more suction -

*got the vacumn out - used the hose - put my hand around the hose end to form a very small hole and then held the Iphone 4 Headphone hole up to the hole i had made with my hand -

IT WORKS NOW!!!!!

All of these things potentially work--- I always recommend a hard reset. If you're going to use a blow dryer, I recommend cool or cold air, or one of those air keyboard cleaners. Plugging the headphone jack and removing it a bunch of times sometimes works -- but the last time I had this issue I must have plugged it in 200 times and nothing. What I actually had to do was roll up a small piece of a sturdy paper towel around the straight side of a bobby pin- and used that to physically swap/clean out the jack and that finally worked. Just be careful to use a heavy paper towel and wrap it tight. The last thing you want is more debris in there. And be gentle. You don't want to break your phone. I wouldn't recommend cuetips -- the fuzzy part will get stuck -- but you can use the stick part of that with a paper towel to clean it out. This worked for me after trying everything else for hours. I'm happy to say I do not have to buy a new iPhone this morning after getting stuck in a rainstorm last night (with a lifeproof case may I add... A lot of good that does... It loses integrity every time you have to open the case)

I've encountered the same problem as well. That was after having the overheating battery problem too. As it happened the headphone problem occurred on my iphone while I was hiking, I'd taken precautions to protect it from the elements. The first indication that things were amiss was it wouldn't switch off, quite an issue on a hike, then it went into headphone mode after I recharged it. On first investigation I found that it worked, very,very briefly when I flipped into itunes, then it cut out again. Needless to say when I got to civiliaztion I seached the web and found I was not alone, like this thread. Anyway, this problem persisted for about five weeks and I'd tried all of the remedies suggeted, at least I was able to get it to switch off, but it was still stuck in headphone mode. Although sometimes it would make the occassional noise after trying some of the solutions. So, I was about to take it back to the supplier when, one morning, it it just sarted to work again, out of the blue. Then I recharged it and it stopped again. In frustration I gave it a good hard shake, which I must say was very satisfying, and it's been working ever since.

I used a can of cold air and blew that into my headphone jack. It worked and then when the cold air wore off it went back to headphone mode. Please someone answer!

OMG!! My iphone 4 got wet, and when I saw, everything worked except for sound, when I turned volume up or down, it said "Headphones". Connecting it to headphones and then off did not worked, but after hopeless sucking in that headphone socket for like 20 minutes I took a finall long suck and... WORKED!! Didn't thought it would work but it was my last resource after setting it on rice for 24 hours and it worked!! Hope this helped as it helped me 😉

I used the same technique, took 3 long ***** out of the headphone socket and bingo success!!Phew
