Mid-2011 13" Macbook Air Trackpad problem.

I have a new mid-2011 13" MBA and have noticed the trackpad is noticeably less smooth when scrolling than the one on my 13" MBP. Is this a unique problem with mine or one that others have seen? Any suggestions? I've tried repairing the permissions and resetting the PRAM/NVRAM with no change.

I am having tons of issues with it being hyper-sensitive. I am constantly having issues with it moving items, highlighting when I don't want to, clicking links or submitting things I didn't intend to, etc. Yet at other times it's completely unresponsive and I have to click something repeatedly.

It's pretty annoying while it's happening, BUT, for what it's worth, once I demonstrated the problem, the folks at the Genius Bar gave me no grief about swapping the malfunctioning computer for a new one, and I haven't had the slightest problem with the new one over the past month. It's a small sample size and not a long length of time, but there does seem to be some basis for believing that this is a problem that appears from the outset or not at all. Get your computer replaced right away and you'll probably never need to think about it again.

Just wanted to add that I had the same problem with the 13" Mid-2011 Macbook Air. Once it heated up, even a very light touch would register as being "clicked", making it impossible to work since I was constantly selecting and dragging things around. The hotter the laptop, the more sensitive the button. After about a month of this, I'd had enough.

I took it to the Apple Store, but they wouldn't help me until I could demonstrate the problem. I ended up running eight different 1080p YouTube trailers at the same time to get it nice and warm for the problem to occur. The tech hadn't seen this particular problem before, but she kindly opened up a new box and gave me a new MBA without a hassle. I've only had it for a day, but the problem hasn't come back.

Very pleased with the customer service. What I've come to expect from Apple. 🙂

Similar problems here on a month-old machine. I hoped it was a software problem but the reports here make me think it's hardware. Unfortunately I'm on vacation and haven't had a chance to back up my machine so taking it into a store for a swap isn't an option. I guess I'll limp along using alternative navigation methods until I can get home and back it up.

Having same problems. Bought it at the beginning of August and I've been struggling with this for almost a month now. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does... I want to throw this thing across the room.

To those who had their Air replaced, did they move over your files and applications? I don't want to lose my anti-virus and microsoft office software. (already had to purchase them again after my last MBA was stolen on an airplane). I'm a full time med student and can't have it sent away for service... Any advice would be great!

I decided not to wait until I got home. Took it into the Portland (Pioneer Place) store yesterday afternoon and picked it up this morning with a new trackpad. Early days, but so far all is well. (And replacing just the trackpad means there were no file transfer issues, so I could have saved that $100 I spent on a Western Digital Passport to back up my system before taking it in.)

I'm having a similar problem with my 6 week old MacBook Air 11" 256 i5 being hypersensitive and I'm dragging files all over the place. It's become hard to get any work done on the thing. I phone applecare and they asked me to reinstall lion. I did. The problem returned.

I brought it to the genius bar and they gave lion a full clean install. The problem returned.

I've noticed that both times I called Applecare was in the afternoon.......perhaps when my machine had been on all day and gotten quite hot. (However I've also seen this intermittent problem in the moring shortly after switching on)

I've got to bring it back to the Genius bar at the weekend to get the machine repaired.

Took it to the apple store last night, and the Genius bar techs were able to reproduce the problem. Discovered that it was happening even when the computer was running on their copy of OS X Lion. It's a hardware problem! Not software. My store was out of new trackpads (sounds like it's a common problem), so they've ordered a new one and will call me when it's ready to install. I'm using a USB mouse for now, and the glitches have resolved. If need be, show them this page when you go into the Apple Store and they should be able to take care of it a little better!

Hi,

Same problem with my bright new MB Air 13" buyed 4 weeks ago here at Brussels - Europe.

When system his hot (after 10min), random clicks, when just moving gently my finger on the pad (mainly on the lower half part).

System sent to repair services in Holland center for trackpad swap after only 7 days.

After 3 weeks, getting the system back today wit exactly the same probem !

Arghhhh. For my first Mac experience I'm really not convinced...

Nor by hardware, nor by after sale services...

Going back to the shop tomorrow to get a full system exchange, or my money back.

Hi, been having a similar problem, and found this other forum that has a temporary solution. Mine is the same as their problem, very arratic when power is connected but OK on battery.

Solution 1. Work on battery and recharge later. (Not really acceptable)

Solution 2. Place left hand on frame beside track pad and use right hand on track pad. This works for me but still not great. Seems to be a power issue. Posting link to other forum with their solutions/problems/advice.

PS, at least one other user resolved the issue by replacing the power cord.
