Mid-2011 13" Macbook Air Trackpad problem.

I have a new mid-2011 13" MBA and have noticed the trackpad is noticeably less smooth when scrolling than the one on my 13" MBP. Is this a unique problem with mine or one that others have seen? Any suggestions? I've tried repairing the permissions and resetting the PRAM/NVRAM with no change.

Switch MBA off, then on while keeping Cntrl + R depressed until grey Apple logo appears. A new screen appears with several system restore functions. Re-connect Wifi (upper screen right), and select OSX-Lion install. OSX-Lion will be re-installed without affecting your data and software. As OSX is downloaded from the internet, it may take up to about 2 hours to finish.

Hello Vanquished.

no, not resolved yet. Next step is the replacement of the "topcase" which (as far as I understood) includes all cables - no idea if that also includes the mainboard.

My statements to other solutions mentioned here:

- my trackpad has been changed 2 times to no avail. I assume the replacement of the trackpad will not resolve the problem.

- I'm having the problems also in my guest user account which is a system you can't pollute with custom programs in any way. I assume, the fresh installation of lion makes no sense.

Thanks very much Steffen_g, your reply and advice is much appreciated. I have booked an appointment at the Apple Store tomorrow here in Perth. I'll be showing them your reply and other relevant ones on here. My love affar with my MBA is well and truly over. I can't wait to dispose of this pile of crap. Life is short. I don't want to have to wait for 3 trackpad replacements and the replacement of the topcase!

I've been having the same issue with my 11" MBA trackpad (irratic movements, unresponsive, etc). I've been using the USB mouse to get around it, but it's only a temporary fix.

I've read on a few other sites that (for some at least) its related to the power supply and doesn't seem to be an issue when unplugged. When my pointer was acting up, I unplugged it. It stopped acting irraticly, but the trackpad was still not responsive. Some people have said they've fixed the issue by getting a new or aftermarket AC adapter. Interstingly, I just moved my MBA to do some work. Before I had my AC adapter plugged into a power strip. Now its on a plain old cheap extension cord and I haven't had a problem so far (fingers crossed). I've been using the MBA for a few hours now and the problem usually occurred within an hour, so its hopeful.

So perhaps this is a solution or something you can all try. See if you still have the problem with the MBA unplugged. Try plugging in the AC adapter right to the wall outlet or different power strip or getting a different AC adapter.

I really wish we didn't have to deal with this issue at all, but hopefully this is a fix for me and maybe some of you.

Thanks!

Hey everyone,

I thought I'd keep this forum going. I am having the exact same issues as well. I have a mid-2011 MBA 13, and I am fortunate (or unfortunate due to warranty issues) in that these trackpad issues have just started for me a couple of weeks ago. I am beyond discouraged. I try to scroll, and I continuously "click" without clicking, perpetually "right click" every time I scroll with two fingers, highlight text, drag items, and even manage to delete content. I almost had a heartattack when I accidently deleted my 150+ page graduate thesis (thank god it was sitting nicely in the trash and I could CAREFULLY retrieve it). I just read through every single post on this forum, and while taking a break, I managed to somehow drag this page off of a "tab" and into a new window (while checking my email). I mean, seriously, what the crap is going on here? Anyway, I've tried all the tips here, as well as some in other forums, to no avail. Plugged in, not plugged in, heated-up or running cold, bluetooth on or off, it doesn't matter. The trackpad does whatever the **** it wants, whenever the **** it wants.

I am a first time Mac user, and I have been absolutely astounded by the performance of the MBA up until a few weeks ago. I thought all my ridiculous, frustrating PC issues were finally solved with the brilliance that is Mac, and now I am left in astonishment that such an obviously consistent and blatant problem is being completely ignored by Apple.

I bought my MBA for its reliability. I travel consistently, and I currently live in Central America. I am completely reliant on my computer, every day, to do myriad tasks. The MBA is not only lightweight and "travelable", but supposedly endlessly-reliable. It's supposed to "just work", right? Now I don't know what to do. I'm currently in Mexico, unable to work, and using this $1,500 paperweight to struggle through my day-to-day tasks.

I suppose I will make my way to buy a USB mouse as soon as possible, and I will have deal with this on my next visit to the States in May. What a disappointment. My old model of buying a cheap $300 netbook that has to be replaced every 1-2 years doesn't seem so bad after attempting to reconcile with a $1,500 MBA that is now useless. I'm amazed that I've gotten through writing this with minimal (8, and yes, I've been counting) highlights and general moments of ridiculousness from my trackpad. Back to cheap netbooks for me that last twice as long for 1/5th of the price. For shame, Apple...for shame.
