connecting to airprint through wifi repeater

I recently installed a wifi repeater and I'm having difficulty connecting to my Airport Express(es) and HP e-print enabled printer. When I use my iPhone 4 or iPad 2 to connect to the router I am able to print and see both airport expresses. However, when I connect to the repeater I no longer see the printer or Airpor Expresses. All seem to have a static IP address, and I've gotten it to recognize the units but it doesn't seem to be consistent.

I have contacted Amped and got this:

A customer support staff member has replied to your support request, #498111 with the following response:

Apple Home Sharing does not work on extended networks, but our products are compatible with apple. We are aware of this issue and trying to work on a fix for this issue. At the moment there is no fix for this.

---

I questioned the "compatibility":

'I don't know what you mean by "our products are compatible with apple". AirPrint (or any kind of printer) does not work. iTunes does not see the iDevices, and the Apple TV does not see the computer where the music/video is.'

Note: I am having a similar problem with Windows and printer's SMB broadcasts. I think they do not repeat any broadcast messages, so no "discovering" is possible, ever.

If you guys look at

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2708968

you'll see that the AVM folks have already fixed their Fritz WLAN Repeater.

Unfortunately that one is not for sale here in Canada.

Please note that the problem is only with discovery (which relies on broadcasting). In the case of my MacBook although it cannot discover the printer or my mini I was able to print using te printer IP address. But that is not possible for iPad and iPhone, they need AiirPrint. The repeater has a good signal strengh and works very well with streaming. A shame it is basically useless on an Apple-based environment.

I just installed an Amped SR10000 repeater, latest firmware, and I have the same symptoms. If connected to the base WiFi I can see the printers from my iPad/iPhones and WiFi Sync works. If they are connected to the repeated WiFi the printers are not seen and Sync will not work.

Have you found a way around it? There must be something that the repeater is not "repeating" like some broadcast messgae. The IP network is the same, all IP addresses are in the same subnet, so I cannot understand why this is happening.

Mikey, have you contacted Amped yet?

I had the same difficulty with the same Amped Wireless repeater. I could only see my AirPrint printer on my iPhone if I connected directly to my (main) wifi network and not the repeater network. A similar difficulty occurs with iTunes wifi sync -- It only works if my Mac and my iPhone are not using the repeater's network.

It's not that repeater clients cannot see other client since I can access my desktop PC network shares from my Mac if connected through the repeater. It's just things like Airprint and iTunes wifi sync that don't work.

Got this now:

"I really appreciate your input and info on this issue. We are investigating and trying to update our firmwarer to address these issues. Thank for you help and sorry the repeater doesn't work for your needs."

So there is hope a new firmware will allow it to work for Appleware. It would be good, it is such a nice device,

strong signal, easy to setup, excellent for video etc. I am looking forward to see it fixed and I will buy it again when that happens.

I have this same identical problem using a Netgear N600 wireless router with a Netgear RangeMax as my wireless repeater. Printing off a Canon MG5320 which support Airprint. If my iphone is connected to the main wireless router it prints fine through Airprint. If my phone is connected through my second Netgear Rangemax acting as a wireless repeater, my Canon printer errors with a 6901 error and my iphone can no longer see the printer. If i go back and connect my Iphone to my base wireless N600, the printing issue goes away. I guess this issue isn't specific to one router company. For now I will just make sure my iphone is connected to my primary wireless router to print.

That is exactly what I have been doing. I switch to my base (and weaker signal) network to print, then go back to the repeated (and strong signal) one. But you probably agree that this is lame :-( And I agree with you, it seems to be a commom problem with all repeaters. My take on it is that they block multicast messages, which are used by the discovery algorithms. They sometimes make an exception to Microsoft multicasts but fail to realize the world is now full of Apple multicasts. The first one out there to add an "Apple compatible" in the box will have problems manufacturing enough devices to supply the demmand. Best regards.

Came across this thread while trying to print from my iPhone using the Amped wireless repeater. I was experiencing the same issue of not seing my printers unless connected to the main wifi network. I am happy to report that I downloaded the latest firmware from Amped's website and I was able to print using the extended network.

Reading the release notes looks like theu fixed this in an earlier release.
