DVD Player flashes subtitle fragments after turning subtitles off

Same problem. And your right, it doesn't seem to show up until the first subtitles happen. Would be great if they solve this. It's not the end of the world, but it is annoying!

I've been noticing this too, but only recently, say since the beginning of 2013. My SuperDrive was replaced about a year or so back. My MacMini is about 4-5 years old now. I spoke to the pros at the video store where I rented the DVD and they said they've heard about it with other Mac users. Also notice it only happens in movies that are in Engilish with the occasional subtitle. Will give the above suggestions a try next time. I've just been ignoring it once it begins to happen. Good to know I'm not the only one having this issue. I wonder if it's just with older SuperDrives or if new ones have the same problem?

Has it been reported to Apple as a bug? If not, everyone who is having the problem should send a bug report.

Was wondering if anyone has heard of any updates to the subtitle flickering issue? I'm having the exact same issue... that is subtitles flickering when playing a DVD (player 5.4) that has embedded subtitles used as translated bits of foreign language? Very frustrating. And when I tried to file an Apple bug report, the developer site is apparently off-line.

I put all my movies on my mac in "VIDEO TS" format. and I use the built-in "DVD PLAYER" to watch them.

When I watch a movie and they speak in a different language, subtitles pop-up like they are suppose to, but when they start speaking English again the subtitles "FLASH" quickly for the rest of the movie.

stopping the movie, force quitting the player, relaunching the player, and finding the spot I left off at is the only thing that fixes it, BUT THAT IS SUPER ANNOYING!!! and it happens again the second they speak a foreign language.

This makes mac "DVD PLAYER" useless to me. there does not seem to be a way to update it or reload it.

I tried to use VLC. But it does not notice people speaking in foreign languages and does not offer subtitles at all (to translate foreign languages) even when I turn on "closed caption".

I can not get Quicktime player to open Video TS.

Mplayer is to hard to use. you cant navigate in it. (no fast forward, rewind, skip, if you want to watch episode 2 of a TV show, you have to watch all of episode 1 first)

I went to the apple store, they were no help. I e-mailed apple support, no answer yet, now I am posting here.

I feel like a cave-man going back to my bulky DVD's that I put in the basement.

So if know one knows how to fix this... can someone recommend a different media player?

This problem has now been described fully and accurately as far as version 5.4 of DVD Player. I know that MacOS Lion comes with the next version of DVD Player (version 5.5), and it will not run on Snow Leopard. I don't know what is included with Mountain Lion.

Does anyone here know if the problem has been solved with the Lion or Mountain Lion version of DVD Player? If so, an OS upgrade is probably the only way to fix it. I suppose Apple won't go back to fix a bug that only exists on an OS that is two versions back.
