Lion abruptly logs out multiple times per day

Since upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion, I've had an increasingly frustrating problem of Lion abruptly logging out. And as luck would have it, it's when I'm right in the middle of doing a bunch of work.

When it does the logout, everything just freezes for a few seconds, I sometimes see a little spinner in the middle of the screen, then it just takes me back to the login screen. I'm then able to type in my password and log back in.

Yesterday alone I was abruptly logged out seven times throughout the day. It typically happens 1-3 times a day.

My hunch at first was that it was either Photoshop or Rdio that were causing it (as they were always open when the logout would happen), but the last couple of times it happened yesterday, neither were open.

I've also had a ton of font issues (mainly with Safari), but I do have tons of fonts and use a font management app to handle them (Fontcase). So I'm also wondering if some system font issues could be causing this too?

Here are apps that I've had open when the abrupt logout has happened:

  • Photoshop
  • Rdio
  • Safari
  • Transmit
  • Textmate
  • Terminal
  • Base
  • iChat
  • Mail

I'm stumped (and thorougly annoyed) at this point. Not sure what else to do to try and narrow down the problem.

This is has been happening to me since day one of installing lion, the first week I had at least 30 right out kernal panics. They finally fixed that I believe with 10.7.2, but this logging out and not waking from sleep happens almost everytime I shut my MBP. It doesn't wake up when I open it and when you close it the indicator light on the front lights up....whereas it should light up when you open it. Now i've noticed that even if i leave it plugged in and opened it and turn the sleep slider to never it still logs me out after only a little while. From what I can tell it's clearly a graphics issue. I just installed gfxCardStatus to see if that helps but this is getting ridiculous. I realize it's a new operating system but I had less than 3 crashes in a year with SL. Lion has has 100 x times more in just three months.

I held off until yesterday upgrading to Lion 10.7 again after the first time (now 10.7.3) due to a horrible condition that rendered my laptop useless shortly after installation - the black screen of death (DSOD) - there is a very long thread about that on the boards. I actually had to have my mptherboard replaced, I don't think there was ever any official explanation for what happened and I beleive there may still be some folks out the affected by that issue.

Fast forward several months - under pressure to move to iCloud (dumbest idea ever IMHO) i succumed and udated my laptop again. Other than some really annoying 'features' crammed down my thoat I have had a mostly good experience with Lion, mostly, but the day after finalizing and tweaking the OS for my personal preferences, as well I could - a new rather sinister BUG has surfaced - the random log out. This is, so far, just really annoting as I have not noticed any lost work but sometimes with several applications open and working on several projects at once the screen goes blank for up to a minute and then I am faced with the login screen. The only thing I can think is ***!!??

Short version - I guess I am not alone and ME TOO!!!!

Apple please look into this and see if you can help us out - TIA.

Frustrating... Mine seems to be a timed thing. 2 hours of no user interaction and logout.

Does everyone else have multiple accounts on your machines? I do.

I've disabled the screensaver, set the energy saver settings to never, double checked Security and Privacy settings, and set Automatic login to my primary user. I've even checked parental controls and

As a web designer it is infuriating, I keep coming back to find my uploads cut in half.

The only workaround I have found is leaving an unsaved file open. This aborts the logout.

Soooooo frustrating... I lose a few hours of work each time it suddently logs out. I can't express my frustartions enough. I'll be switching to Snow Leopard some time this week.

When this happens, usually I'm running 4 to 6 files in iZotope RX 2 and/or a few files in Adobe Audition. It takes hours for the batch files to finish and if Lion logs out in the middle of my work, I loose ALL of the batches (lots and lots of cursing going on here.) Sometimes it would happen with only Safari opened.

Here is my workstation setup.

Early 2009 Mac Pro

Lion 10.7.4 (Build 11E53)

2 x 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3

NVIDIA Quadro 4000 2048 MB

Adobe Production Premium CS6

No 3rd party apps in background

Yep, same problem here. I found a few things on other discussion boards. It is possibly related to the automatic switching of the internal and discrete graphics cards and the windowserver process that crashes. They recommend a little app called gfxCardStatus where one can select manually which graphics card is being used. I've only just installed it and I haven't had time to verify whether it solves the issue but maybe you'll want to try as well and report back. I haven't got Boom or any of the other apps installed that were previously mentioned as potential culprits. I really think it has to do with a graphics card command that is triggered by applications. For me VLC has caused a number of logouts and that uses the graphics card ...

Hope this helps,

Hi,

I have the problem over tiger leopard and snow leoperd over a mavbook pro 2007, and with mountain lion over a retina MBP (restored from time machine)

SO, i'm pretty sure, it's a software problem (or issue, excuse my english)

I tested the same TM copy in a iMac for 2 months and same problem, so it's a VIDEO related problem.

Alleays with video quicktime, flv, etc..

I think that Qt X dont have good feelings with Qt7

Believe it or not, when I clicked on the link in the email notification about the status update (the link that takes me to this thread), Lion logged me out. I had an old SL installation with QTX and QT7 on the same OS and I've never had an issue. For a number of reasons I chose not to migrate anything automatically but do it manually and I did not copy QT7 across, so I only have QTX installed.
