Change default window position?

The default new document or template browser window position is offset from the edge of the screen by 30 or so pixels. It should be flush with the left hand side of the screen, otherwise it just wastes space. I've tried repositioning the window, saving a template and having that template as the default, no such luck. Is there anyway to fix this STUPID interface behavior? Pages should remember where you like windows to open, just like Safari does (or for that matter just about any Mac application).

I was hoping this would be fixed in Pages 2, no such luck.

Any suggestions? I've tried poking around in the com.apple.iwork.pages preference plist, no NSWindow Frame bit that seems to affect it.

Hullo Jason.

Welcome to Pages discussions.

This topic's come up for discussion before. Look for lupinaro, *viewing in full screen width a few days back if you like.

Fact is, there is no provision for "save view preferences" in Pages." It's a feature many would like, and you might care to add your input to "Provide Pages Feedback" under the "Pages" main menu.

However, there is a workaround, and since you've gone as far as saving a template, it might suit you. If you want to use a pre-existing template, you can also do the following with a document you have already saved with as little input as you care to - using it as a model. Or if it's one you've started on, but need to work with again, you can return to just how you left it.

The trick is not to open a new document every time you want to work in Pages, but to click on a template or document (which can be blank except for a cursor position if you like). The template or document will then open Pages just as you last left it - even to where you left the cursor when you last saved it. And next time you want to work on your document, just click on that.

Sorry if you already knew this. It's a feature of many programs. But if you haven't used one that has it, this may be news to you. Just remember that if you use a "dummy" template or document for this purpose, and want to keep it for use again - make your first save once you have commenced new work a "save as" with your new file name. This will leave your "dummy" intact. You can have as many of those as you might need particular screen set-ups, giving each a name to remind you of what they are.

It is only when you open a new document, or open an existing one from a new Pages session, that Pages will default to its original screen settings (for a new document) or cascade the workspace if you open an existing one.

Opening from a Pages file, instead of from the Pages application, is a way of getting round this. Not quite the way it should be, but it might get you by until the Pages team fix it up. But if you're only half happy with: Tell them!

Cheers.

Oops!

At least Pages is better than this little text app for replies, when even if I preview I can barely read what I've written.

Where I've said click, I should have said click (to select) then double-click to launch. And I mean, in finder. I forgot to close the quotes in "viewing in full screen width" too. At least in Pages you can see what you're doing!

Regards.
