Apple Mail, Searching is worse!

I thought Apple Mail searching for emails was suppused to be easier, so far it is worse!

I may be missing something and hope I am, but when I type a name of a person "Smith"....

...I cannot find/sort by sent?

...I cannot find/sort by Name

...I cannot find/sort by Subject

On occasion I see a blue highlighted: sort by Name, but that is about it.

It is really bad and worse than Office 2011 and worse than SL's Apple Mail.

Thx much for any help you can provide.

I would like to add my voice to the original poster's confusion about searching in Mail. It seems that Apple has taken many steps backward with search, apparently trying to read my mind about what I might be searching on. In previous releases I could tell Mail quickly what I wanted to search for, but now I play a cat and (literal) mouse game with the search field, where it *might* give me more options on what I'm searching for, or it might not. I've had to remove my search and re-enter it many times before coaxing a full drop-down of search options. This is perhaps the worst search interface I've seen since the original Sherlock created a riches of embarrasment for earlier version of OS X.

In Snow Leopard I taught all of my employees how to effectively and quickly search for information in customer emails in a variety of ways. I'm the beta for Lion in my company, and at this point I have no intention of upgrading any of my employees, mostly for the reason that Mail search will slow down their effectiveness.

As Apple tries to "simplify" their interface for Grandma and Grandpa, it seems like they're taking away powerful features that small business and other savvy users need. It's a real pity, and I'm hoping that Apple will restore the most obvious of search options in Mail, or give the option to do so. (and while they're at it, put back scroll bar arrows!)

This does not solve problem. You can still not search as 4.6 or earlier where multiple words within a message can be searched. I spent hours with senior torches today at apple and they both made me feel like I was asking something the others were not. Sad. I've been a Mac user since 1986 and have 10 macs at home and every other apple imaginable product. I now have to erase all drives to go back to snow leopard, after having spent +$1500 on Rosetta upgrades. My whole weekend will be spent fixing this nightmare

Handy, quick shortcut to searching Mail: In the Spotlight preference pane, check only Messages and & Chats. Use the menubar for your query, scroll down the list of results and a readable Quicklook previews pop up beside each item.

Search heaven, for the first time in years.

Several other useful searches, I've made Saved Searches for, and put that folder (in your user Library) in the Finder sidebar. No loss of Spotlight functionality by doing it this way.
