I bailed on Lion

I've been with OSX since the beginning. Each iteration a step forward. This one is not...

- Mission control is a fail - expose was much easier to understand and use

- Launch pad is a fail - much easier to use the application folder in the dock as list (yes, like Windows does)

- UI graphics are sketchy, they're slow and add nothing to the overall experience

- Versions is a step back - it assumes I want to save everything I ever create when in fact, it's the opposite (I like to save the drafts that mean something to me), so now I have to close windows one at a time and discard each window (vs. just closing the app and being asked if I want to discard)

- Safari keeps all these windows open - I often surf with a large number of windows open, closing is the easiest way to rid myself of them... but now Lion thinks it knows how to work better than me, so it just keeps re-opening them - forcing me (not the application) to close each one

- It's not stable ... for the first time ever, I can't believe I'm saying this about my Mac - I don't trust it, when waking from sleep it takes forever, I login and can be logged right back out (no disernable reason); my Wi-Fi connection drops for minutes at a time; mission control can't display things in a consistent manner

At end of day, I reverted back to Snow Leopard. It's the right thing for me to do. They (glitchy) eye candy and "I know better than you what you want to save, open, and display" attitude of Lion is just intrusive. It's a step backward.

And reverting back to Snow Leopard - what a pain. Not sure how others are doing it, but I couldn't install from the Snow Leopard in Lion; I had to backup all files, start up with the Snow Leopard Disk, erase my hard drive, then reinstall Snow Leopard. And I got the pay $29.99 for that experience. Just not what I had in mind when I saw the improvements.

Anyone else step back into Snow Leopard? After a week of Lion, was a pretty easy decision for me.

Well said Toilet. Your use of Mumbo Jumbo followed by a good dose of Hocus Pocus, and Gobbledygook has lead this reader to transform his iMac into a magically use - less machine. I hardly ever notice that people handling large spreadsheets now have time to light up a smoke every few minutes while they are waiting for the auto save function for finish. Focus, focus.

I agree totally. Now how do we get our money back?

From another poster in another thread, but potentially useful to you...

To get a LION refund, simply go to iTunes and then the iTunes store. Log in to your account and you'll see purchase history. Click "See All". Your lion purchase will be there. Click on it. Then click on "Report a Problem". Tell them you want you money back. I got a cheerful reply in a couple of hours and the refund in 3 days.

If you don't care about the 680 MB of the recovery HD, just reboot with CMD+R and wipe Macintosh HD with diskutility then choose "Restore from TM backup" and you are back to SL (provided you still have a TM backup from SL).

If you don't have a backup, it's booting from a SL install disc, wiping the HD, installing SL then installing all your additional software (you may need their install mediums/files too).

Well I have four Macs...

My two are a 2008 intel MacPro and a 2010 MacBookPro core i7 15". For both machines I simply downloaded and installed Lion.

My MacPro started to have some issues one of which was waking up from sleep. Also I lost compatibility with my audio hardware (apogee duet). After thinking about it I decided to try a complete reformat and fresh load of Lion. Prior to installing Lion I'd done a superduper backup of my boot drive so I can go back to snow leopard as of almost the instant before lion.

Well the fresh install did wonders. Sure I had to reinstall many things... I worked on my laptop as it ground its way through install disks and online installers. But now my MacPro is stable and seems to just work. I am having some issues. Logic does like me tapping the stop button. My Duet is still DOA until Apogee comes out with a new driver. But everything else is fine. The only issue I'm having on my fresh MacPro install is that iCal is not correctly updating with MobileMe. Thats a little frustrating but I can use my iPhone or iPad calendar for a bit till they sort that one out.

I read with horror the threads about MBP 15's just like mine crashing. Well mine is not. It's working nicely. I do think I might do a clean wipe and install but not for a while. So far so good.

As far as Lion and the "features"... personally I took to them right away. I love many of the new features and gestures. I do have to say LaunchPad could use some refinements. I have too many apps installed for it to be useful. I want to be able to make the icons much smaller. But in general I love mission control AND I've found with the right settings you can make it act almost like the old spaces. Things are just in different places but they are there.

Like any major OS upgrade this one has its minor issues. And to the people that just can't deal with it, the advice to wait for .1 or .2 is valid. So far I like it and I'm enjoying it.

Totally agree with op here. So far i hate the osx lion, and will be going back to snow leopard. First of i hate the ios impementations. I hate ios, (i have an ipad 2 that i would like to sell, and buy a android that lets you do what you like, but that is not the issue here) i have a late 2010 macbook pro 13" with 8 gb memory, intel ssd 160 gb 2 generation, and the new mac mini 2,3 ghz with 8 gb ram. And it is so painfully slow on both my setups. The thinking ball comes up when ever i do things like open finder, safari, ical, itunes and so on. This goes for both the mbp and the mini. It is worst on the mini tough, but it is not the way it is suppose to be. I have done fresh installs on both computers. First sl on the mbp and then lion. And the same is the same. So i have sendt an mail to get refund on the lion, and will be going back to snow leopard on the mbp, and will try to downgrade from lion on the mini if i can make it work.

Last but not least, my thoughts about this is MY thoughts, other can say what they would like. It is slow for me, and the is nothing wrong with my setups.

Just my thoughts about what i think is apples vista.

Well, my Mac book pro late 2010 is the first mac I have owned. I will say that I liked Snow Leopard. I am a big fan of Unix and this is what drew me to buy a Mac. I installed the Lion upgrade and everything went to crap. I had a lot of trouble with too many things to list here. But, I found that there were two issues that caused the problems I was having. One, I had to un-install my Eset anti virus prior to upgrading. Two, I had to un-encrypt the home folders I encrypted using File vault prior to upgrading.

I have Lion running now and it is working well, I just had to tweek out (turn off) some of the features that I did not like. There are always going to be a few bugs, it will be resolved.

After the 1st upgrade of Lion, when I had all the problems. I had to erase the drive and re-install Snow Leopard and make sure everything was updated prior to the 2nd Lion upgrade. Now, it is running great : )

I guess it would be better to do a clean install of the Lion OS, upgrades are always a bit buggy. No matter what OS you are upgrading.

I'm using 15" i5 2.4ghz 4GB MBP from 2010.

I thought Lion was great at first, until my comp started slowing down. I can deal with slowed performance, but what frustrated me the most is the glitches I get in iMovie now. I get weird distorted lines whenever I put video through iMovie. Even old clips that were playing fine before are now distorted on iMovie. To see an example of the distorted lines I am talking about, check out this clip

So far, no one has been able to help. Anyone have a clue?

Yep, well, I have to join the Lion haters too although, I was lucky cos I only installed it on a small Boot Camp partition of Snow Leopard just to try it. Regardless of all the new funky features, some of which I really do like, it is the fact they dumped Front Row that killed my experience. My beloved 24" iMac is my main media center and sitting back flicking through my media collection via remote is one of my favorite uses, but they killed it citing it was unpopular with users? Well, not this one!

Sorry Apple! I give Lion a big thumbs down and a wide birth.
