Is there a way to protect selected photo files with a password?

Put the Library on an Encrypted Disk Image.

Password protect iPhoto library is pretty easy,
see How to password protect iPhoto Library for more details.
That's an excellent idea. Pay $18 for an app that will create an encrypted disk image and put the library on it.
