Audiobooks go silent

I have purchased roughly 12 audiobooks recently - all for listening on my iPhone 4 (current iOS ver). All the books are approximately 8-10 hours in total length. 5 out of the 12 books will go silent at random places towards the end of the book. The time indicator (EX: 1:32:12 mins remaining) continues to tick forward but there is no sound. Scrolling back, book plays, but once it hits that same exact point it goes silent again.

I can delete the book from the phone, then re-add it to the iPhone via iTunes and the book will stop playing at the exact same moment.

Since you cant delete the book and re-download for free from iTunes, I am forced to fill out a trouble ticket with Apple, wait from 4 days to 2 weeks for them to credit that book back to my account so I can re-download it without paying again. When I download the same book again, it has always played all the way through without any problem - so far....

I have searched far and wide for others with similar problems and there seems to be many others out there with similar issues, but so far I havent found any remedy.

My guess is that there is a hiccup when the book is being downloaded, but the software isnt smart enough to recognize the corrupt file and allow another download without human (read: way too slow) intervention.

HELP?!

You are not alone. I have purchased loads of audiobooks. Of these: two John Le Carre's, The Bolter, The Great Railway Bazaar , and a couple of others have gone blank about after an hour or so of playback.

Shorter books seem to be OK but it seems Itunes can not handle larger file sizes.

Logging a ticket and waiting and hoping for a refund seems the only option, which as you say is time consuming and a real pain since it can only be done via itunes not from the iphone (the logic of the design and user experience elude me, how much do they pay their software guys?).

Apple finally replied and in effect said you cant download larger content direct to the iphone you have to connect to your mac. I recommend using the Audible app. It is significantly better than iTunes not only does the download from the phone feature work but you can sync to multiple devices and if content is deleted for any reason e.g. you loose your phone before backing up , just download again for free! There are other nice features such as the sleep function.
