There's nothing to trubleshoot. The phone is a brick. Tried everything Apple said about Unkonwn error 9: using different cables, USB ports, different computers, Itunes versions, that stupid program that everyone says it helps ....went to the store...nothing. You should read what your posting if you really want to help people because anyone can give that advice/link - it's the first thing anyone with a computer and my problem searches. We have a real problem and Apple and people like you by not saing anything usefull is only adding to our frustration.

I completely agree with you. I am suffering with an Iphone 4 for more than one week. I've tried to restore it using different computers and different O.S (Mac, Win 7, Win XP...). I've asked help and nobody in Apple is able to help me. I bought my phone two months ago in the US and I live in Brazil. There is no way. I have a fake wordwide warranty.... The phone is a brick. Always error 9.

There is no such thing as a worldwide warranty and never has been for the iPhone. The warrenty is only honored in the country of purchase. You should not have bought the phone in the US if you intended to use it in Brazil.

You can try the following steps to resolve the problem; they work for most people:

  • Find your hosts file (usually c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts), open it with a text editor. If it contains any lines that include "gs.apple.com" delete them and save the file. If you find such lines and remove them you will have fixed the problem.*
  • Reboot your computer.
  • Disable your firewall and antivirus.
  • Launch iTunes.
  • Plug the USB cable into a USB port directly on your computer, not to a USB hub. If you have a desktop or tower use a port on the back, not the front.
  • Disconnect all other USB devices except mouse and keyboard.
  • With the other end of the cable disconnected from the phone, hold the HOME and SLEEP switches until the screen goes blank; IMMEDIATELY release the SLEEP switch but continue holding the HOME button. (If an Apple logo appears you have held the buttons too long; do it again)
  • Plug the cable into the phone while still holding the HOME button and CONTINUE HOLDING THE HOME BUTTON. After some time (which may be a couple of minutes) iTunes should recognize a phone in Recovery mode. NOW release the HOME button and your phone should update and restore.

If it doesn't you have a hardware problem with the computer or phone.

*If your hosts file contains gs.apple.com it means that the computer had been used at some time in the past to hack or jailbreak an iDevice.

Thank you for your message, but unfortunately I have to disagree... Last month, when I was buying my Iphone 4 in 5th Avenue Store NYC, the seller told me clearly: - take care of your invoice cause you have a one year worldwide warranty." And I asked her if it was valid in Brazil and she was assertive: - Yes, of course!

I have tried all of these options... I conected my laptops directly to my modem, withou anti-virus, without firewall and I am stuck on error 9... I can not say that I have problem wiht my connection or computers cause I've tried different combinations...

I will not try to jailbreak my iphone cause I am planning to go back to USA soon ( my "hosts" is clear ). So, I wil try to replace it...

I used to believe that Iphone was perfect. Now, I learned, that it is good, but it is not perfect. I've paid USD 700 for something that do not works...
