Software Update For IPAD 2 (to version 4.3.5)

I connected my Ipad 2 to my PC via USB and was told there was a software update available (4.3.5). I accepted the offer to upgrade. Thereafter, it appeared the software downloaded. It then indicated it was going into a backup routine; at that point all progress ceased. The first time I attempted the update, the "backup" ran for over three (3) hours. I killed the process and re-booted. Tried it again and then started getting the prompts that the backup process would not work because the "files could not be saved on my PC!".

This all seems a bit bizzarre. Can anyone offer a solution to perform this update? (The IPAD2 is about 6 months old.)

Is this the article you were following: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3125

I am assuming you are using a PC, follow the steps in the article and disable ALL of your antivirus/antispyware software and try again. Are you perhaps using Kaspersky?

I didn't find anything referring to the red Off slider in the article but you would only see that if the iPad was on and you were turning it off.

Curious if you made it to the Apple store and the outcome. I am having the exact same problem. I am hoping there is a fix that I just haven't tried yet outside of making a trip to the Apple Store as my nearest location really isn't that convenient. Tried everything I could think of last nght and even talked to tech support who wasn't able to come up with a solution. Tech's first thought was it may be a hardware issue. Also curious if you have 3G on your iPad 2 as my iPad was working fine until I turned wireless off and 3G on while at an appointment yesterday.

I've posted earlier on this thread about my (similar) issue in that iTunes and my iPad (ver 1, 3G) were getting completely wrapped around the axle and not talking with each other.

Mine had not degraded to the point that the iPad wouldn't recognize being hooked up to iTunes via USB, which it sounds like yours does not. The following may not be of help, but I doubt it will hurt anything to try.

In my case, at first the backup just would hang during the update. Then Sync failed, then I had to try to do a restore. Restore failed -- it started but wouldn't complete. Yucch. I called Apple and the tech first suggested trying a couple of the easy fixes which we've discussed in this thread and others.

In the end, he had me uninstall all my Apple apps in a very specific order, then reinstalled iTunes 64. Voila', my iPad and iTunes are on speaking terms once again. Backup, Sync, and upgrade all proceeded normally. Here was the hymnal he was singing from:

Be sure to open the bulletted item(s) to view the uninstall order.

Be sure to reboot after finishing the last uninstall.

Be sure to install the latest iTunes specific to your system.

Final Update for all who may be curious: I went to the Apple Store. After some initial chatting, they took the IPad (16g, WiFi... connected to a WIN 7 PC/ 3.2ghz) Ten minutes later after being on a "diagnostics box" the IPad was restored to factory original. My backup did not work and the sync was incomplete when performed so I spent several hours reloading apps and contacts, etc. When the IPad was handed back to me, I had one question: What was wrong? The Apple guy quickly and honestly confessed that he did not know, that sometimes "they just lock up and the diagnostics program frees them." I wish I could report some magical step to take that would assist others with the same issue.
